Why did you join allnurses??

Nurses General Nursing

Published

As many of you are aware we "allnurses' staff went to Washington DC and had a booth in the exibitors floor.

During our time at the booth in DC we had many people who said they surfed allnurses.com site but didnt join and become members even though it is free to join.

So my question is what made you take the plunge and become a member?

And for those surfing the web site right now, why dont you join and tell us why you never joined before?

I am just interested really why?

Specializes in ED.

In my Pediatrics elective, we were made to do it by our instructor. I have just stayed ever since lol:redbeathe:yeah:

Specializes in Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy.

I joined about 4 years ago, right when I started thinking of becoming a nurse. It gave me a peek into the mind of the experienced nurse, the vocabulary, the whole nursing universe. It's a look I could not have gotten anywhere else.

I stuck with allnurses throughout my schooling... from pre-reqs, to volunteering, applying to nursing schools, BLS and ACLS, etc. etc. etc. And I will be graduating with a BSN this August. Now I am leaning heavily on allnurses for job search advice, tips and support.

Specializes in Med Surg,.

I needed a nurses ear, a nurses opinion, a nurses point of view and I wanted to know what my nurses of the stethescope was up to. It has been so valuable. Thanks allnurses:redpinkhe

Specializes in NICU.

I joined in 2007 after taking my boards. I fell in love with allnurses and I truly do not think I would have made it through my 1st year as a nurse without y'all. It is so wonderful to have a place where you can come and safely vent about your day without having to deal with the consequences of complaining at work.

The support I receive here is amazing and I have learned so much. From how to deal with family members, tips and tricks, links to other amazing learning sites, ect.

So THANK YOU to all the mods and Brian.

Love y'all!!!

Some people just aren't in to participating in online communities. I had specific questions I wanted to ask, and I like participating in online discussion boards in general.

Specializes in ER/Trauma, Home Care, Corrections.

You know, I can't remember that far back, but it is likely that I saw an article that I wanted to comment on. We have a lot of challenges in Nursing, and health care in general. After 30+ years as an RN, guess I think I learned a thing or two worth sharing. You can't join in w/o joining up.

I joined because I wanted to learn about Nursing from the 'after-graduation' nurses' perspective. As a Nursing & Allied Health Librarian I ONLY get to talk with students or faculty and this helps me better understand what all is going on in their world.

Specializes in Med Surg, Parish Nurse, Hospice.

When I joined, I was having a hard time in my nsg career. I now realize that I had the start of burnout. It helped me to be able to see that other nurses felt the same way that I did and had advice either good or not so good. I have stayed on for the past 4 or so years off and on. It seems that I turn to all nurses when I have trouble or bad feelings about nursing. Maybe I have more time then. I have referrred the site to several friends and my brother in law as he started nsg school in his late 40's. I enjoy the site and usually at least look at the topics to see if any are of interest to me.

Specializes in Geriatric, Med/Surg.

Like many others, I joined so I could reply to a posting. I simply can't resist entering into a conversation about topics that interest me and get very frustrated when I can't reply..so I joined and really enjoy it. It's good to realize that I'm not the only one feeling burned out and frustrated, and that there actually is a light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully not a train! I enjoy reading where everyone works, too. I'm day shift charge nurse in a small nursing home, but we have some very confused, very active residents that are high fall risk and often do fall, simply because we don't have the 1:1 staffing necessary to keep them always safe. The paperwork and stress when they do fall is outlandish.

I am an RN as well as an attorney, specializing in medical malpractice defense. I was thinking recently about the 2 careers, pros and cons, and did a Google search on nurse/lawyers. Allnurses popped up.

I read through some of the topics, found some interesting posts, and decided to join, to be able to access all sites without limitation. I think it is good sometimes to think about what other choices one might have made, and how it would have affected one's life. We all have doubts, we all wonder "what if".

People sometimes ask me which career I like better. I answer that unlike medicine, there are no true emergencies in law. Most of what lawyers do happens after the fact also, without many areas of proacting or advance planning. This may also be true with medical care in this country.

There is no panacea, no perfect world in either nursing or law. There is stress, heartbreak, winning, losing, clashing of personalities, pain, rewards, and frustration in both fields. There are also many different areas of knowledge and specialization in both.

I joined in part to touch base with other nurses, to assess my own skills and decisions, and to see how others would respond to given situations.

I saw yet another example of some nurses getting hung out to dry (this time in KY); I believe a bunch had been using "mother's milk" PRN as if it were a protocol. Many were doing it and got canned, but if I recall the pharmacist, MDs, etc. were not rebuked in any way. Anywho, I had to express my displeasure with the situation...I'm somewhat fuzzy on the details, but I wonder what happened in that situation (i.e., if further details came out, if more people were held accountable, what the end result was).

Specializes in Med-Surg Nursing.

I have been a member here for a LONG time! Used to chat with Brian(AllNurses founder) in chat late at night after I got home from working 2nd shift. There was a bunch of us that used to chat after midnight in the chat room when Allnurses had one. Some of those chatters left here and started their own board because they were banned. I followed those people and we became a tight little group. They sent me presents when I finally delivered my son back in 2004. Unfortunately, a few of us left that group due to the actions of the owner of that private board. Two of us reconnected on a Mommy message board and remain good internet friends. I met one of those girls back in 2008 at NTI Chicago!!

I joined in 2001 after I got internet access at my house. I searched for nurse and Allnurses popped up. I don't come here as much as I used to.
