Why is it so hard for a nursing student to get a job?

I have been searching for a part-time job in just about every hospital in this city since September and it's next to impossible to get an interview. Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about getting a ward clerk/unit assistant/ admitting rep/ ER rep position. I have a lot of administrative experience, but no one wants to hire me or call me for an interview. What's up with that? Am I the only one having this problem?

Have you tried to get a job as a nurse's aid or assistant, or what we call it in Florida, "Clin. Tech." I just moved back to NY from Florida, I don't know how it really works here, but the hospitals in Florida loved to hire nursing stdents as a nurses aid, and they did not require any certificate as long as you are a nursing student. The nursing school I went to encouraged it, this way at the same time you are in the clinical area and learning, which will help you to prepare and have some experience when you you graduate, and are an RN. Sometimes the floors get to know you and even offer you a job on the floor when you graduate...it is a good way to get your feet in the door. I hope this helps.

Unfortuanetly...they only offer these positions to nursing students that completed 1 clinical rotation or individuals with experience. I will start my clinicals in the Fall, and won't be eligible for this type of job until December. My problem is I will need a source of income between May and December. I am considering taking out a loan to live on for this time period because the stress is starting to wear on me. Thank you for the suggestion.:)

Does your school have a nursing lab? If so they should be getting flyers from the various hospitals that are hiring nursing students whom have completed or will complete their first semester in clinicals. I know that New York Hospital Queens in Flushing has a program and Southside Hospital on Long Island, Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola NY. I don't know if you live or have access to them. Try going to their website. If I get anymore infor I will inform.

Yes, I found the same problem: overqualified!

I kept cking board at school that posted jobs for nursing students and was just hired for part time doing in home care for elderly woman (a few shifts/wk). The family likes to hire nursing students, pays them well, treats them well. Sweet. Will be making X2 more than I would in the hospital.

While this was not the type of job I thought I wanted, I do like this woman and appreciate the opportunity, plus will have time to study during the job. No high excitement but a chance to provide care for someone who needs it.

Most hospitals only hire unit clerks that have training from a program. They are usually now certified..............

How about a lab in the hospital after they train you to be a phlebotomist?

Thank you for all of your suggestions and replies. I am still hitting the pavement and web hard, I'm sure I will get something before the summer ends. I have checked into a few programs, but most of the positions are already filled. They do not do a good job of posting openings on my schools bulletin board, you pretty much have to do all of the leg work yourself. I will not give up without a fight!:p

Congrats!!! You are right, this position should give you time to study.

Also getting paid is not a bad thing.

Do you live in Brooklyn currently? Are you willing to travel to Roslyn? St Francis hires nursing students as "Comfort Care Providers". It is like a plain old Nursing Assistant. Their next step up is a Nurse Extender (they will promote you after at least a semester of clinicals). It's not a glorious job, bbut it may pay some bills, and give you some exposure.

Thank You for this information I will give them a call today. I am willing to travel to any of the 5 boroughs and Long Island (Nassau).

I was wondering how far it is from St. Francis to Manhattan? I do not have a car, so I rely on public transportation. If you know, please let me know.

thanks.

I looked the information up on the web. Take the LIRR from Penn Station about a 45min train ride, and then you must take a bus (15min) or a cab to the hospital from the Port Washington train station. 1 hour sounds about right, b/c Rosalyn in very close to the border of Queens.
