Hello, Yes, I went to a job fair and some of the hospitals gave out salary information. For 37.5 hours/week, Winthrop is $57,750 for new grads, New Island is about $56,000 for new grads, and I was told Mercy Hospital was about the same. Huntington hospital and South Nassau is about $58,250, and don't take my word on this, but someone told me that North shore Manhasset and Plainview are about $60,000 base. These salaries don't include differentials and expericene. I did find that some of the hospitals were higher on night differentials than others. Winthrop's night diff. is an extra $6500 a year ($3.33/hr). Some hospitals were the same and some were less, about $5600. Winthrop requires 13 shifts a month, so that means you do need to work 4 days in one week, once a month, but it is all overtime. Winthrop's benefits are pretty good too, that is something else you need to look at and compare between the hospitals. With some of the hospitals benefits, you had to pay more out of pocket for medical insurance. I don't remember if it was Huntigton or South Nassau, but for Medical Insurance for a family plan, you had to pay about $90 a paycheck, and for winthrop it is about $25 a paycheck for a family plan with United Healthcare. Hello Did anyone go to the Nursing Spectrum job fair at Marriott Melville? I did go, and it seemed to be a good thing. A lot of the recruiters were impressed with my resume and some of them said they will be calling me, and to call them if I don't here from them by the end of next week. Hopefully I do here from them soon!! The recruiters at Winthrop Hospital were very nice, and recognized my resume, since I did apply online 2 weeks ago. Has anyone on here had good experiences and outcomes with job fairs? Does anyone work at Winthrop Hospital? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Michele

Have you tried to get a job as a nurse's aid or assistant, or what we call it in Florida, "Clin. Tech." I just moved back to NY from Florida, I don't know how it really works here, but the hospitals in Florida loved to hire nursing stdents as a nurses aid, and they did not require any certificate as long as you are a nursing student. The nursing school I went to encouraged it, this way at the same time you are in the clinical area and learning, which will help you to prepare and have some experience when you you graduate, and are an RN. Sometimes the floors get to know you and even offer you a job on the floor when you graduate...it is a good way to get your feet in the door. I hope this helps. Michele

there already is a profession called a medical technician, they work in the lab. also a clinical technician is already taken too, that iis the name they use instead of nurses aids, in florida. michele

I meant it to be silly, it was a joke, that is why I put LOL after it. I was just trying to get a point accross, since some people think they are better and smarter than me because they have a BSN, I was just trying to defend my self. I feel it doesn't matter if you went to college or not, it comes down to what you know, and experience... for all I know someone who didnt even graduate high school could also be smarter than me, but doesnt give the right to constantly rub it in my face and tell me that I am not a good nurse or I don't know what I am doing, or not qualified enough because I only have a ASN. If you read all my previous posts, you will see that I feel no matter what degree you have, it really depends on the individual, the schools we came from, and the experience we have, and that's what makes us a good nurse, it doesnt matter if you have a BSN or ASN. Having a BSN doesnt make that person any better than anyone else, we are equals, we are all RN's, we all took the same test, and we all need to work together, we all balance eachother out, and are supposed to be a team. Also for your information I did have more than 2 years of education. I'm soory but I think you took it the wrong way. Now you are the one being a little rude with your last comment, and this is the kind of stuff us ASN's have to deal with and try to defend ourselves against, and it should not be that way....Once again WE ARE ALL RN'S, it doesnt matter what degree we have, we all worked hard to become an RN. I wasnt degrading or belittling anyone, it was a joke!! I was just trying to point something out, and giving the others something to think about. Especially to those who think they can talk and spell better than me, becasue they have a BSN degree and I only have an ASN degree. Anyway.... Autonomous or not, we all had higher education, we all passed the NCLEX and we are all RN's, I do believe we are a profession, and all of us are PROFESSIONALS. Michele

That is so not true. No matter what initals are behind our names, we all took the same test, and all of us are RN's (maybe I am smarter than a BSN nurse becasue I was able to pass the NCLEX with 2 years of education...LOL). No matter how much education any of us had, we are RN's and an RN is a PROFESSION no matter what...hence the new name REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSE. Beware MyBlueSky I was nice, you may come accoss some others that might be very agnry with what you said!!! I guess since you are still a student you have a lot to learn. If you needed a minimum of a BSN degree to be a nurse, then we would be in trouble, we would have even more of a greater shortage, and healthcare would not be the same. Michele

I dont know what you are talking about, because I did have 2 years of clinical experience, and I dont have a BSN. Also, in Florida the BSN program only gave their students 1 year of clinical experience, and they were only on the floor for 4 hours 2x a week, in my program we were on the floors for atleast 8 hours sometimes full shifts (12hrs) 2-3 times a week. I know of some people who wished they went to my school instead of the BSN school, because we did learn more, and the school was well known for it's nursing program. All the hospitals we went to, the nurses rather have a student from our school than one from the BSN school, taking care of their patients. I worked with some BSN students who just don't know as much as the ASN nurses, so it really comes down to experience!!! I know so many people who did not graduate from college and are 10x smarter than people with BSN and Master degrees, and that is becasue they worked 10x harder and have more experience, since they have been working since they were teenagers. I have a friend who has a BSN degree in education and going for her masters, and I really hate to say it, but she is not the smartest person around, she is very nieve and has no street smarts. I also have a friend who is a Medical Assistant, who has been doing it for many years, and she sometimes knows more than I do. Once again, it is not about how much education you have, it all comes down to EXPERIENCE!!! Michele

Hello...about the NCLEX, you really cant go by how many questions you got, it is random on how many they give each individual. When I graduated and took the NCLEX, this is how it worked for my group. The day I had my NCLEX all the people I know that had it the same day got the most questions...I think it was around the 265, and we ALL passed. A couple of my other friends went on a different day, and got 75 questions, and ALL passed, I also spoke to other classmates and all had different amount of questions and ALL passed, out of our whole class of 75 students...only one failed, unfortunately I dont know how many questions she got, becasue she didnt even tell everyone that she failed . So hang in there, I'm sure you did well, keep us posted. Michele
