Externship Experiences
You need to bring a resume, cover letter, 2 references letters from your clinical instructors, and an official transcript to the Employment Services office on York Ave between 72nd and 73rd Street. I would say do it soon as possible because all of the spots are filled by May. Good Luck!

Externship Experiences
Did my externship at NYP-Cornell and loved every minute of it. It was 10 weeks long, worked three 12 hour shifts a week and got paid $14/hr...they also decided to give us the option of staying throughout our senior year.

It would be horrible to think that Sloan did this to their employees, however, they do in fact have a program set up for employees (not the 401K) that they contribute to. I know quite a few people who work there and have taken advantage of this. Because they have such a great benefits package and a wonderful facility they will always be competition to unionized hospitals.

College of Mount Saint Vincent
I just finished my 5th semster at CMSV and have 1 more to go before I graduate the 2nd Degree nursing program. If you have been to college before than you know that every university has red tape. So just keep that in mind. I'm at the Mid-Manhattan site, which is for non-traditional students. Class size is small, some prof. are helpful and some collect a paycheck. It's all what you make out of your time there. Educational wise its a good nursing program (3rd in tri-state area on passing NCLEX), but its a very challenging program also. If you work a full-time job that could also be a problem. Most of the students either stop working, work in a hospital (12 hour shifts 3 days a week), work at night, or have flexible part-time jobs. Hope this post is helpful to you. Good luck with whatever you choose.

College of Mount St. Vincent
Hello, I am a current student at CMSV and will be a senior this Fall. I am in the second degree program and will try to answer most of your questions. So yes, just like any school Admin can be a pain in the butt, yes the classes are hard but doable with a great study group, you do need to pass you Nursing Calculation (Medication Math) test with an 85 or better and if you fail they give you a second chance. However, you have plenty of time to study for this Med-Math test and they have a great tutor. Ummmmmmm:uhoh3: , oh the program is 4 semesters not 5 as someone else stated and they do offer Nursing class in the summer for 1/2 price, but this does not include the Nursing clinicals. You take classes like Pharm, Health Promotion and stuff like that in the summer. If you fail 2 clinicals your out. The second degree program is small and close knit. I guess if you have any other questions just post them and I'll try to answer them ASAP.

You can also take Nursing classes while you take pre-req's. They will allow you to take Intro to Nursing, Health Promotion, and Nursing Research and Theory. There is this one professor that teaches all of those courses and she is a hardball, but the word is that she was suppose to retire after the Spring 05 semester. I took 2 out of the 3 courses while taking my pre-req's and all you need is time management and a good study partner.

Questions about CMSV: How is the program, is it really hard ? Most of the classes are challenging. I took 2 nursing classes so far and I had to work hard for both of those B's. The science classes are not so bad as long as you keep up. I have heard that clinicals are a killer and you really have to put a lot of time into studying for the test. There is a test every 2 weeks once you start clinicals. How is the Chemistry class and Development Psyc course. all I have to take is the second half of these classes? Psych is a piece of cake and Chem 2 (well like I said don't fall behind in lecture, the lab is easy if you have a certain professor :) ) How supportive are the professors of the program, in making sure that students succeed in the program? Professors are willing to help the students as much as possible. Because of the 15:1 ratio it's easier for them to help each student. How are faculity members? Some are nice and you will always have a shady character or two wherever you go. So what's your opinion Pace or CMSV? It all depends...location is a big factor in why I choose CMSV. Clinicals are at St. Vincent's Hospital (12th st) and the classes are held on West 52nd Street. The only time you have to go to Riverdale is for Chem lab and that's on Saturdays. The choice is yours. Regardless of which program you pick I'm sure you'll do great. Sorry it took me so long to reply, but I switched jobs and had to get situated.

Hi Moonberry, Will you be attending school at the midtown Manhattan site? if so the classes are small (10-25) students and when you began clinicals there will only be about 30 people in your clinical group and they split that into 2 groups. There really isn't much of a campus downtown because the classes are at St. Vincents Midtown Hospital (formerly St. Claires). However there is a Bally's near by. I don't know the exact pass rate for the Nclex, but I believe it's high. If you need the midtown directors e-mail address or phone number I can give it to you just PM me. I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions.

Why is it so hard for a nursing student to get a job?
I looked the information up on the web. Take the LIRR from Penn Station about a 45min train ride, and then you must take a bus (15min) or a cab to the hospital from the Port Washington train station. 1 hour sounds about right, b/c Rosalyn in very close to the border of Queens.

Why is it so hard for a nursing student to get a job?
Thank you for all of your suggestions and replies. I am still hitting the pavement and web hard, I'm sure I will get something before the summer ends. I have checked into a few programs, but most of the positions are already filled. They do not do a good job of posting openings on my schools bulletin board, you pretty much have to do all of the leg work yourself. I will not give up without a fight!

Summer/Fall 05-what are you doing?
This summer I am taking Microbiology and Pathophysiology. Finally in the Fall I will be starting my clinicals. I will be taking Health Assesment, Nursing Care Concepts, Nursing Care of Adult and Aging, and a Developmental Psych class.

Why is it so hard for a nursing student to get a job?
Unfortuanetly...they only offer these positions to nursing students that completed 1 clinical rotation or individuals with experience. I will start my clinicals in the Fall, and won't be eligible for this type of job until December. My problem is I will need a source of income between May and December. I am considering taking out a loan to live on for this time period because the stress is starting to wear on me. Thank you for the suggestion.:)
