Hello everyone! I was trying to give my friend some insight on reasons not to leave school nursing for her first bedside nursing job. She is not a part of this wonderful community so I will have to show her your responses.
She says she loves school nursing (4 yrs), but says this is an opportunity too good to pass up. I told her consider her age (44 yrs, not old just being realistic) and how hard bedside nursing is on the body, plus it is a night shift.
What are your thoughts???
Thank you in advance!!
Sad part about reading all this from you nursing students (Not one myself) is that these individuals who clearly don't give a **** about there career nor patient care GOT ACCEPTED INTO THIS PROGRAM when Im sure there is plenty of other candidates who got denied that actually want to help people and strive for this career choice.
How does the selection process even work? IF they don't encorporate interviews I think they should start doing interviews and test runs on candidates to see how they're. Or give hte instructors power to remove a student for not 'caring' enough. I mean these people are going to have patient lives in there hands and yet they get to breeze by in nursing school? Such bs

Please look to see where you are posting. This section is for school nurses, not nursing students. We are all nurses who have gone to school, finished school, and chosen to work at as the nurse in a school.
The question at hand is what might be a reason to leave working in the school environment to go to bedside nursing. Please do not come out of the gates swinging when a little attention to detail could have saved you the time.

I have no idea why you would want to do this; I am trying my best to get out of working nights and bedside and INTO school nursing, not for the hours or pay, but so that my schedule will align with my life better!
I have been part time nights and part time days for the past ten years; it is only getting harder as I age to flip from days to nights to being at school events for my kids, etc. Lack of sleep has made me a real #itch at home, and that is getting worse as I age....I used to be "okay" with my 4-5 hours of sleep between shifts, cooking dinner before I ran out the door, and making sure all is taken care of at home and work. Now I want to kill my neighbors dog for waking me up, I am groggy more than I am awake, and when you add in PMS/pre-menopause, I either feel like crying or stabbing someone on a weekly basis.
So yeah....I cannot fathom one single reason to do this. Wait. I can. It's money. That is literally the only thing that is holding me in my two current positions.
What Dude said plus I've seen a lot, and I mean a lot of vitriol about patient satisfaction requirements and surveys driving nurses away from the bedside on a different forum. Bedside, it seems, is being reduced to scripted concierge service.
Oh yea, the script. I forgot to mention that because I don't follow it. At Urgent Care we're supposed to knock on the door, get permission to enter, introduce ourselves as "so and so RN," I'll be your nurse to day...Mr. or Mrs. ???...what would you prefer to be called? Then explain the history of the world and explain what treatment has been prescribed and then ask if they have any questions and ask if our services have been to their satisfaction and if "no" educate them as to how to report us to hospital administration and then thank them for allowing their child to be in our care for their visit. Hahahahahahahahaha I wear a badge with my name on it and my credentials. If they can't read and they want to know they can ask me. So you can guess how the rest of the script goes.

Oh My, this describes my present job. I thought it was just me. I need to apply at that turkey farm.
