Why would you give this up??

Hello everyone! I was trying to give my friend some insight on reasons not to leave school nursing for her first bedside nursing job. She is not a part of this wonderful community so I will have to show her your responses.

She says she loves school nursing (4 yrs), but says this is an opportunity too good to pass up. I told her consider her age (44 yrs, not old just being realistic) and how hard bedside nursing is on the body, plus it is a night shift.

What are your thoughts??? :specs:

Thank you in advance!!

Your friend is feeling the need for a change and more money.

Night shift in a hospital will be challenging. It will also be one helluva learning experience. After gaining that experience, she will be able to write her own ticket.

It may take her back to school nursing, but she will have a ticket to anywhere.

Her AGE? Hey, I'm 58 and run my *** off in an LTC facility.

I know, I know. ;)

But she has never done any type of nursing before except school nursing.

I'm 40 and I'm going to be doing bedside on nightshift. I'm a PCT now. It doesn't kill my body and I love it. We use lots of different methods for turning patients that don't kill out back. We have lifts, lift sheets, slide sheets. We always turn with at least two people. Maybe your friend really needs the money. There's nothing wrong with seeing what else is out there.

I think she needs to make her own decision.Maybe she is bored. There's nothing worse than not liking your job.

I think it depends what her future goals might be and if she wants to dip her feet into other waters. Sometimes, though certain jobs may be better in different ways, we feel a personal pull toward other settings. I always tell my cohorts I will miss them if they leave but wish them all the luck in the world with their new ventures. We all see the world differently.

It's just my opinion but I think she's out of her mind to consider this. Ask her if she's ok with sleeping only a handful of hours before getting up and doing it all over again and then walking a minimum of 5-6 miles a night while at work, my personal high number is a bit over 8 miles in one shift. On top of that is all the lifting and transferring of patients. Almost all the nurses on the floor at my old hospital have less than 3 years experience and the ones over 40 have all moved on to easier pastures like PACU, outpatient surgery, clinics, etc.

Maybe she could try it over the summer. take a per diem job.

IMO, if she feels the need to go into bedside nursing she should do it. Whether it is for the money or to reduce her boredom. I feel she will always regret it if she doesn't do it. We have so many options as nurses. If she doesn't like it she can move on to something else. I love school nursing, but it is not for everyone!

44 is prime time for nurses. Still strong physically and experienced clinically.

I could handle any unit at 60.

Your friend needs to go for "her" dream. You might want to consider butting out.

Yikes! I am considering going back into the hospital at 57 after 15 years in the community. I could work a .6-.7 and make what I make now full time. Politics are everywhere.

I went back to the hospital for less pay, but really to get the bedside experience as a floor nurse. I had a pretty sweet gig in a clinic with good pay and daytime hours, but I was seriously getting bored. I look forward to writing my own ticket, so I can work less, get a Masters, and teach in the future.

Funny, I was asking myself how much more I could take today!
