Why Does Everyone Hate Florida So Much??

Published

I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??

omg! i do to ... but somehow, i always seem to name them "stripe" or "gizmo" guess the movie gremlins is stuck in my head with their weird names :D

i often wonder where they end up tho ... i never see them after a while and don't find them dead in the house .... it is a lizzard mystery :chuckle

my cat finds them, smacks them until they are completely squished, usually plays with their tail, and then swats them until the carpet. we always find lizard guts when we're cleaning.

i found a darn baby crab in my house the other day (we live on the beach). scared the crap out of me. i was afraid to touch it because i didnt want it to pinch me and i didn't want kitty to get it because i didnt want to pinch her. i figured it would dry up eventually.

Yes more people are leaving florida than are moving here

i wish i could move!

Hi,

I had to weigh in on living on Florida!! I have lived all over the country and even overseas (Switzerland) and I will say that one of the worst things for me is having a Floridian "tropical Christmas!!" Other than that, there is no better place to raise my 3 elementary school aged children: we are 5 min. to the beach (Ft Desoto frequently makes it into the top beaches nationwide), 30 min. to Busch Gardens ($50 for a whole year), Fla Aquarium the Zoo (also voted best in the country) and MOSI (the only Imax theater in Fl) and about 1 hr 45 min. to Orlando and all things Disney, Universal Studios, etc.. We are spoiled rotten with fun things to do year-round. It's not cheap but buying season passes with Florida resident specials sure helps. Now you can go to Disney for free on your birthday, too! If you love to go on cruises, the port of Tampa has great destinations throughout the Caribbean.

We have Broadway and other arts in St Pete and Tampa and especially in Sarasota, which is about 1 hr away. The school system in my county has just been changed so that kids will go to their neighborhood schools, unless you get into a magnet program or a fundamental school. We are in a fundamental school and we are grandfathered all the way through high school. They are A+ schools where my kids are getting a private school education for free.

I'm a nursing student so I cannot speak for the salaries.

If you don't like the heat or humidity that is easy to avoid in the summer; just stay in the air conditioning or the pool or boat and wait for the perfect fall, winter and spring weather (minus the hurricanes which are blessedly fairly few and far between with plenty of warning!) Depending on your perspective (it will either be an upside or a downside), you will get plenty of company if you live here!

No place is perfect, but you can do much worse than here, in my opinion!

Here's the issue I find with florida. First and foremost, the pay. This state is pretty expensive, and if you don't make a decent wage, your cooked. As a nurse, you should be able to afford a decent home, but it's impossible because of the cost. (Even though right now the price came down due to the housing crisis). Second, there's no decent form of mass transit. If instead of having to drive around everywhere, i could use mass transit, i would save so much money since my car is always breaking down, sucking gas, or breaking down some more. Some people do have an attitude problem as toward being hospitable towards each other, but i do think that if you live in the suburbs, you can escape it. I do think that the major thing is for nurses to earn a decent wage, because if they don't, then they're falling out of the middle class, and that's not good

I've been in FL since 94, I can honestly say its gone downhill since then.

Its so expensive to live here now, especially if you own a home and pay home owners insurance.

The only thing that will keep me here when I graduate RN is a job, and we all know how that situation is. The only reason I want to stay here is to complete BSN at the same college I'm doing RN.

I'll miss the lizards and my garden :)

Mass transit is the pits in Florida. I am really 80% sure I want to live in NYC. I lived in Chi-town and the mass transit is very good.

If anything, I think the cost of food is pretty low here compared to other states.

Don't get me wrong, i'm a floridian. But first off, the heat here is unbearable, and because of the fact that A/C has to run constantly, it becomes pretty costly. (I'm sure northern states have similar problems when it comes to cold weather, but in south florida, you can't run away from the heat, while in colder states, we're warm blooded so if anything we can warm up). Second, I wish we could see nurses have more leverage on the amount they get paid, and I think this is due to the absence of a union. I'm not talking about bad unions, i'm talking about a union that looks out for the rights of nurses. Making sure that they're pay doesn't suffer, or that they don't get stacked with 12 patients per nurse. Third, mass transit. Why is it that i can't go anywhere around here without a car!!! I know we're at sea level and all, but we could figure something out. Traffic is a pain here, and improving our mass transit would create jobs. Just my 2 cents

Like any place FL has it's pros and cons

Pros:

Warm weather, no snow.

Clear blue skies

Beach and lots to do

Close to bahamas and cruise trips

No state income tax

Cons:

Horrid nursing salary

Horrid nursing working conditions

No speak spanish, no job (in s.fla anyway)

Hispanics thinking this is cuba/mexico/argentina/etc, restaurants and places in Miami that don't speak any English

High rate of illegal immigrants

Exceptionally high cost to purchase a home

Exceptionally high cost to purchase homeowners insurance

Exceptionally high cost of property tax

High cost of auto insurance since most people here drive without it

Terrible road rage

Terrible crime, multiple deaths reported daily on the news

Live bunched on top of one another with zero property lines

Hurricanes and rainy season

Shoot, I think I can go on and on. I've lived in s.fla since the 80's and it really has gone way down hill. I think you can have a better quality of life in states like PA, TX but the weather is a trade off. I'm not sure what kind of income tax those states pay on salary either..

when you apply for a job everything goes well until they ask "are you bilingual ?" OMG ERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!:angryfire

I know exactly what youre talking about....especially the spanish problems....when im done with nursing school I am moving out of south Florida or out of the state completely :smackingf

I recently moved to North Florida.(Gainesville):yeah: I love it here. I am not looking for work right now as I am still "on vacation." I loved South Beach,Miami for vacation. I did look at the Sunday newspaper in Miami and found no nurse jobs offered in the paper.:o I did see a few nursing jobs for Gainesville in the Sunday newspaper. I know the wages are less here. I would like to do private duty nursing. I am an LPN and they pay $15 an hour. I don't know if being fluent in spanish is required for the jobs here.
