Why Does Everyone Hate Florida So Much??

Published

I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??

it sounds like there is still racial bias which i have heard. i am amazed that when i go to tampa bay area that there are many whites and few hispanics and mostly african american. i am not used to that. i am used to many hispanics, asians, portuguese/brazilians, africans from africa, and more.

really? i've found it just the opposite! there are greeks, jamaicans, haitians, serbians, englishmen, canadians, australians, germans, russians, cubans, mexicans, filipinos -- even i had no idea how amazingly broad the cultural spectrum was in this area until i started working in the hospital.

I agree Angie. I think it depends on where you go. There are parts of the area that is very white, with a smattering of Hispanics and no blacks. There are other parts where I feel like I'm in a foreign country. I live in a racially mixed area with a lot of African Americans and not many Hispanics. There's even an area with a lot of Vietmanese. I love the diversity of the area.

I also disagree that Florida is a southern baptist Christian state. Perhaps some parts are, but around here there really isn't a predominant religion. However, from my research in Community Health, I know the largest religion in Florida is Roman Catholic.

I have been to a place in Daytona where a white girl told me that they are not used to seeing blacks in the area. I was surprised as nearby there is a aviation university where a few blacks attend. I am truly fed-up of Florida. I used to work at a hospital which has no union but blacks get less pay than whites. I had to leave because I would be mentally unstable if I had continued to take the abuse from the doctors and my manager. Another thing, I was getting far less than those who are inexperienced and came after me. It reminds me so much of Tallahassee. Gosh! I can't wait to leave Florida.

I don't like Florida but it has nothing to do with the people there.

I am not a big fan of year-round summer and everywhere that I have visited..unless it's a high-end section of town, most of Florida looks like it's in a constant state of recovery from storms.

Good evening!

As a former New Yorker (3 years ago) I wish to say i can't wait to leave Miami. My main problem people are rude here.

Thank you.

i would love to visit Florida

Loved Florida... such a pretty state, lots of fun. I am hoping to move back by next summer. Either Palm Beach or Tampa area. Can't understand the negativity about it. I just don't see it. It's got everything I need to live happily and comfortably.

People were pretty friendly to me, never had too many problems. Can't wait to go back.

My boyfriend and I live 2 miles from Universal/IOA. At times I love this place and sometimes I hate it. I am from the "Lowcountry" of SC and GA. Savannah/Hilton Head area. To me the heat here has not in the 4 summers I have had here (which last from about March to October) been bitten by a mosquito or been hotter than I was back home. I myself can't beleive the whole skeeter thing, I guess they spray around where I live (which is right next to a huge lake). I think it is cooler here because we get the ocean air blowing across the whole state from coast to coast. At least that is my theory.

I do love the long summer and the fact that I am wearing shorts in January! I love having alot to do. I love the diversity of the people that live here. But, I hate the amount of crime, I am not that impressed with my kids schools, and it sometimes doesnt feel like home(as another poster said). It is a very transient state that is very true. But there is a ton to explore, and I have met a lot of nice people here.

"This is because his education is ultimately my responsibility as his parent."

That is what I have been stating! The education system down here does not work unless the parents decide it is their responsibility as a parent!!! The schools are NOT third world schools. They are very good and the teachers are by far the best I have seen, so the question is why are there so many drop-outs and so many pregnancies? I have noticed over the last 10 years the hordes of people coming down here from up north and I think they are looking for a utopia that doesn't exist. They come here thinking there are jobs galore and when they cannot find a job they become disillusioned and are unable to return to their original state because they have no money. I have commented many times to my husband about the many poor, unfortunate children who are homeless. At my elementary school alone, there are 80% of the children who have free or reduced school lunches. This is not a new phenomenon that would accompany the bad economy. This has been going on for nine years since I've been a school nurse. So if you have children in the public school system and they are flourishing, then pat yourself on the back because you are definitely doing your job!!!

I could not agree with these two statements more. We as parents have to take control for our own kids sakes!
