I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??
I was born in Morton Plant in Clearwater and raised in Spring Hill. I love living here, there are so many opportunities for young people to enjoy. Yes there are a few billion old people, but hey they fill my hospital every season, so keep em coming ! From the beautiful beaches to awesome sports teams, Florida is for me.
One day i'll probably move and see the rest of the country but for now ill keep my jet ski and kayaks.

My grandfather had one of the first furniture stores in Brooksville. Spring Hill is a beautiful area, even to this day..
A few years ago, the ADA had a 10K Bike Rally, all through those hills up by St. Leo's..(do I have it right..?)
THAT area is one of the prettiest areas of Florida.
I am an AF brat....who went active duty....who moved all over this country. I graduated HS and college in NYC. I love FL and never want to live anywhere else again!
NO state is perfect. I can say from extensive school experiences.....that if you have a child with "normal" learning ability or better, the schools are OK. If they have an IEP, you better get your "Mamma bear" out because the HS teachers actually *refused* to honor the IEP!:argue:
That being said......
My brother received his ASN/RN about 3 years ago. He earned over $100K last year!!!!! Or should you really wonder why?!? He is paid that kind of money because a 2BR apt in Manhattan is over $3K/mo...he pays Fed Tax, NYS tax AND NYC tax....not to mention that the last time I was in NYC sales tax was 8.25%.....
My parents and my sister live out on Long Island....property tax out there is $6K- 8K/yr!!!! Want a house? Those 100 yo pieces of crap will run ya $425K or more!
So....comparing with FL....My brand new 4BR 2 BA house cost $200K with annual tax less than $3K. Sales tax is steep here in Jax....but no state income tax. A gallon of gas is at LEAST 0.25 less per gallon than you will pay in NY. I don't shovel snow. I wear shorts in Jan. I can go to the beach whenever I want to. In my garage are a pair of Honda Jet Skis and a Honda VTX1800 motorcycle. I have interesting 'neighbors' that visit....the 'lizards' (geckos), the tree frogs, the praying mantis, the dragonfly, of course, I wanted to kill "Aggie" - our friendly neighborhood armadillo that kept tearing up my yard! LOL
No WAY the cost of living here compare with the cost of living in NY. There are advantages and disadvantages wherever you live. It all depends on your attitude about it! :)

St. Leo and brooksville area have a lot of bike trails. Near me there are at least 100 miles plus of biking trails to choose from. It is beautiful !!

Lauderdale...thanks again for a positive post.

My uncle lives in SpringHill. He moved his family from NY to FL after 9/11 and hasn't looked back. He loves it. His daughter is an awesome golfer and sought after by many highschools. I have been to visit him a few times. But, I don't want to live up there so far from the city and the ocean. I want to move to Tampa Bay area.
I couldn't open this.

i hear you and so agree. i wish that people in fl would investigate the rest of the country before complaining about their income and what they percieve as a high cost of living. i live near boston and so understand about nyc as it is almost that in boston. nurses with over 20 years of experience can make $120k per year in a major teaching hospital but parking in the city to get to work is from $20-30 per day. tampa is $5 a day for the convention center garage. in the tampa area, i have found that you can get an awesome 2 bed apt. about 1200-1300 sq. ft for around $1000 per mos. including pool, fitness center, etc. that same type of apt. would be around $2000-2500 in and around boston. a $1000 apt. would be in the slum area and a studio at that without a balcony and dark and dreary. my taxes for my condo are $2100 a year even with the horrible economy. i live in a rundown area of a crime ridden city near boston (two shootings on my street in 2 years and 2 drug houses). i have a parking lot with two spaces (a premium here) and an elevator bldg. i do have 2 bed/2 bath with almost 1200 sq. ft. my condo fee alone is $312/mos. the ones on the beach are around $500 a mos. this rundown condo cost me $215k in 2004 and now worth around $150k. so, that is my story.

I agree with you. Since I moved to Orlando I have never been around so many diverse people. I am actually the minority here. I am not even kidding! I find it to be opposite about Sundays too. If you had cut your grass back home, here I dont think that bothers anyone.
