IV piggyback administration
It would be interesting to do research on this. My main concern is for the 2 abx or meds that are incompatible and back flushing isn't effective to clear the line. What if we could do independent studies on iv tubing where the solution is aspirated from the secondary line after backflushing to determine whether the flush was sufficient. My facility our Pharm D's have differing opinions on this topic. Anyone know of research done on this? We need find the origin of "that's what i've always done" J m

Apologizing when paging physicians
I agree but if the call is unnecessary, or the nurse is not prepared, non hostile dialogue doesn't help them. It irks me that a tele nurse would call a cardiologist for a nonsymptomatic hr of 55 and not know what meds they are on, nor have a list in front of them. once again GATORS WON !!!!

Apologizing when paging physicians
i usually start my phone calls at 3 am when i know the md's are asleep. when they finally call back i ask them a few questions to make sure they are awake. like good morning doc so and so what time is it? where are you? is that your spouse next to you? now that i have their attention i ask for orders that they wrote the previous day. just kidding... i worked nights for a few years (just got back to days) and only on a rare occasion would i ever apologize, mainly if it was the 2nd or 3rd call. i am always polite and there is no need for a "sorry to bother you" because they are on call, and usually they know that as well !! holla cvicu/cvru go gators !!!!!!!!!!!!

Why Does Everyone Hate Florida So Much??
I was born in Morton Plant in Clearwater and raised in Spring Hill. I love living here, there are so many opportunities for young people to enjoy. Yes there are a few billion old people, but hey they fill my hospital every season, so keep em coming ! From the beautiful beaches to awesome sports teams, Florida is for me. One day i'll probably move and see the rest of the country but for now ill keep my jet ski and kayaks.

Funny quotes, comics, anything!
Somewhat funny story from our CPR BLS renew course.....and there after Our instructor was trying to explain how the new CPR standards increased the amount of compressions and that the rate should be about 100 per minute. A classmate asked "how do you figure out 100 a minute?" Teacher replies, there are a few popular songs that go along with the 100 per minute rate, one for example is "Another one bites the dust". We all got a good laugh thinking about what it would be like compressing someones chest and singing that melody in our mind.......WELL it happened to me last week when a patient on our floor coded and i was doing chest compressions. While in the act i subconsciously started humming.... Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone, and another one gone Another one bites the dust Hey, Im gonna get you too Another one bites the dust then i realized everyone was staring at me. In the end the patient survived the ordeal and we all had a good laugh, and considerable embarrassment for myself of course.

Male Nurses
Hey all, First off i would like to say that i am glad i just found this site. Amongst the useless surfing and myspacing I came across this great nurse forum and couldn't resist. I was just wondering how many male nurses we have on here. It would be interesting to hear some of your experiences and stories regarding being a male in what was, and still is a predominantly female position. Thanks Jeffrey RN BSN
