I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??
Hi, I envy you living in the NE, I use to live in Souterrn Vermont and long for the beauty of New England! I understand about the cold but just remember it's no picnic living in Florida in the summer. The heat/hummidity can be oppressive to say the least.
And, I don't want to rain on your parade (or plans) but from what I have observed and heard, you get a much better nursing education in your area! I think you will be surprised at the difference between Boston and Central Florida. I have a good friend from the Boston area and she has a family member with a severe illness and she was taken aback by the difference in care at the hospitals, specifically Mass. General and here in Orlando.
If your heart is set for Fl. then go for it, but just keep it in perspective that every place has its good and bad. Good luck.

:yeah:for telling the truth
I remain unapologetic about my feelings about FL. The science program for my 4th grader consisted of a wilted plant in the windowsill and they were sharing textbooks. The high school notified me after 21 days that my daughter had been skipping classes, but couldn't notify me if she didn't show up because they had to wait till the end of the day to talley the figures. And I DID move. I've never looked back. I'm not bitter, just glad I left. If you like living there, more power to you.
You are correct about the 'quality' of the schools down here. I was appalled myself. I went from the Dallas area (great schools in RISD) to Greenville, SC (idiots) to Jacksonville (OMG!) to find that the teachers focus on blaming the student. In FL, you can go to jail if your kid doesn't get to the school, but once there, they believe that it is NOT their responsibility to get your kid to class! The refuse to cooperate with IEPs.
I have 2 ADD boys and it was a miracle that they graduated! It was WAR with the schools who accepted NO responsibility. YOU, the parent, have to be the driving force to get your child educated down here.
In the end, both of my boys did graduate and are now students at FCCJ as well. My girls are/were NJROTC @ Ed White HS and I can't say enough about the program or SGTMJR and LT! They SO helped my girls focus and become very self disciplined. My first girl to graduate from Ed White earned the Bright Futures Scholarship and is now on the Dean's list at UNF. My other girl is well on her way to the scholarship herself.
Like everyone said, there is good and bad in every location. In the end, I am still happy to live here.

Don't worry about raining on my parade. I totally welcome honesty and any reality checks people are willing to share. Mmm...choosing between oppressive heat or oppressive cold is a tough choice. I may try the oppressive heat on for size for a while at least. :-)
I do love the beauty of scenic NE, but I live just outside of Boston which has the feel of a densely populated, aging, factory city. If I don't move to Florida, I do plan on moving to a more scenic, country setting, and one in which homes are more affordable.
I know that the education and hospital quality in Boston is high, but should I spend the money to go to school up here, only to move south and have my wages be reduced?
i love florida with all i got, but that was before i had kids and looked up the fdle website and was astounded at how many predators and offenders live in that state. in my town alone there were over 200 in a 5 mile radius of our house. my kids were never out of my sight. also, when we were hurricaned out in 2003 ( thanks, charley) we moved to tennessee like the rest of florida refugees. i was appalled that my kids were behind the rural tn schools. my kids were in a "grade a" school, gold seal by the state. wow. they had to catch up! here, though, it is beautiful! my kids play outside without the same worry we had back home. if i had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of fl, i'm glad it was to tn. know how many predators and offenders are in my whole county?? 2. that says it all. we all miss the beach and marvelling at the "nekid from the north" who insisted on swimming in february while we were in coats and shoes collecting shells and rocks. my heart remains in sarasota county, but more safety and security lives here. small rural southern towns are an ideal place to raise kids.
Yeah I feel that Florida SUCKS!! Most of my other nursing friends feel the same.
I feel that this state is best for those that have a family( married with kids) or who are senior citizens. What keeps me sane about living here is I have 3 International airports I can hop on a plane and travel anywhere in this world to get some culture. :smokin:There are no arts, no culture, This state lacks diversity. All you have is in Northern Florida which is very rural alot of backward white people. Central Florida it is mixed both black, white and middle eastern and puerto ricans.
Now South Florida --Miami, Ft. Lauderdale area--You might as well have moved to Cuba down there. Its just weired how Northern Fla is like hillbilly city and then south florida I can get a good mojito:D But we learn from each other...Just can't stand the back ward hillbillies!! YUCK!!!
Now it is easy to purchase a very nice home here especially given the market, but I agree with the above mentioned in that Florida is an Employer state and they protect the tenant more so than the Landlord. And forget about public transit--it sucks!!! It's easy to gain weight here because you dont have to walk alot to get to wherever you are going and there are great restaurants to dine in---so you do the math:coollook:
But hey give it a shot...YOu may like the sunshine state!! I myself miss California--don't want to move there due the economic condtions of the state but may take up a travel assignment.
Oh, I must mention that Florida has a very good bipartisian Govenor Charlie Christ. I like him alot!!! Go Charlie!!
In Florida they could care less if you went for your BSN--I have seen many managers and supervisors that only acquired an ADN, it's not like that up north.
For those that may be single this isn't the state to be in. The party scene gets old as you mature and the I feel the beaches in CAli are MUCH nicer than here.
I am considering traveling nursing to give myself a break from Fla for a bit. I accomplished alot in this state but It's time for a CHANGE!!!
First of all it's redneck not hillbilly! Hillbilly's are 'mountain people'. Rednecks got their name literally from their necks turning red as they performed the hard, outdoor labor that elitists wouldn't dare.
That being said....I live in Jax and there is A LOT of diversity up here. I used to live in Ft Walton Beach and although we used to joke that the area was L.A. (lower Alabama), I never saw anything that would have supported that contention. Here in Jax we have cultural events downtown and many professionals and we do have a few rednecks and more blacks than we have rednecks.
So obviously, I couldn't disagree with Chica bella more. BTW, Chica, I lived in NYC....graduated from HS and college there. I wouldn't raise my family in that environment!!! I have also lived in the bay area in CA, Dallas and Colorado Springs (worked in Denver)....and a few other places.....and I love it HERE!
One thing I would point out to folks.....there is one GREAT thing about the USA....if you don't like a place, you are free to leave anytime you wish!
As far as the ASN/BSN issue....the statement comes off elitist. You don't need a BSN to be a good nurse. IMHO, it is more intelligent to pay for an ASN than a BSN because there is little additional value in a BSN.....and that can be true up north as well! My sis has a BSN and 27 yrs exp. My brother has an ASN and 4 years exp. Guess who makes more money? MY BROTHER! LOL (Sis lives on LI, bro in Manhattan)
Also, a BSN does not make you a great manager. I have an EE degree and we often pointed out that the best engineers make the worst managers!!!! (not people persons) I am going to go the ASN then RN to MSN route myself.
Hillbilly --Redneck, Same difference!! No need to get uptight about symantics.
Whether their neck is red or not still very similiar mentality.
I am not saying that everyone living in North Fla are hillbillies. But I see a trend of that mentality up there. "Good ol Dixie" if you get my drift. Its time we learn from each other and grow.
I have visited your city of Jacksonville. Wasn't bad but not for me.
Just because you state there are a few blacks doesn't quantify for diversity. Heck, you coming from NY and Cali and you should know better. That is diversity--many cultures there.
I wouldn't want to live in NY and you are correct that that is one of the MANY great things about this country--Freedom of speech as well as the right to move whenever and wherever you want.
Everyone will have a very different opinion of the sunshine state, but not one's opinon supercedes the other. We are merely stating our likes and dislikes about this state.
I am glad to know that you are enjoying your time here in this state of Florida.I hope you continue to do so!!!!
Tootles!! Good luck to obtaining your MSN!!!
