I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??
I'm going to get flamed, but here goes:
I've lived here for 5 years now, in Central Florida... Orlando area. There is a distinct lack of culture here; everything revolves around the theme-parks.
The place is overrun with illegal aliens. It's difficult for honest contractors to get work when they are undercut by illegals who don't pay taxes or buy insurance.
You go out in public and there's a good chance that you won't be able to understand the people who are talking around you: they either don't speak English because they're hispanic or they're black and don't speak understandable English.
I don't want my daughter to date here because much of the hispanic culture here (not all) is misogynistic, and the black culture here does not value fathers. (You can call me racist for pointing out facts if you like.)
The weather is great, except for May-October, when the heat and humidity is oppressive and you don't want to go outside. When it does cool off in the evening, the outdoors are overrun with mosquitos.
It's flat, flatter than Indiana.
The surf sucks.
The cockroaches, which are unavoidable, are GIGANTIC.
There's no such thing as fast food. The native work ethic is ridiculously slow.
The schools are bad, but there are a few good ones, and I'm lucky to have found one for my kid.
And now, since Hurricane Katrina drove the criminals out of what was the highest crime city in the country, the crime rate here has skyrocketed.
Sometimes, when I drive down the road and see the home-made roadside stands, I think i'm in a 3rd world country.
To each their own. I think any of the larger cities have similar problems.
I'm in a suburban neighborhood and I love it. It took awhile to get used to the palmetto bugs (way slower than the NY german roaches) and being charged for water, true, but that's my nature; I don't transplant well. But now....I'm quite happy, just 15 minutes from my job.
I lived in upstate NY before this and all I can say is:
FL has way better pest control. I was in a Lyme-disease area and two of my NY friends came down with it last year. I'll take those big palmetto bugs over the spring gnat swarms and deerflies any dang day.
And even the heat -- down here they have a/c. Up there, it's iffy. Snowstorms, rain, mud, tornadoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes all visited the place where I lived in NY.
Here-- almost every day is warm, sunny, and gorgeous. Even the rain is not icy cold. No stairs, no hills. It's a handicapped person's paradise. Food choices from all over the globe--the best grouper, the best Cubans (that's a sandwich). Just about anything grows here in any season.
Anyhow, just my thoughts.
I know this is an old post, but gee I sure did'nt know what a dumb ass I was until Firestarter told me. I am a lowly ASN and would gladly go toe to toe education wise with any BSN. I have lived in Northeast Florida for 29 years and will most likely stay here.
No not everything is Peaches and Creme here, but I will tell you one thing, I wear shorts and tank tops 9-10 months out of the year, when we travel up north I despise having to wear long sleeve shirts and OMG please don't make me wear a jacket/coat.
I can spot a NJ/NY nurse a mile away, just because I am not loud/abrasive/obnoxious does not mean I am slow witted. In fact I kinda enjoy sitting back and watching them spout off about how "backwards" everything is down here in Cockroach land. FYI ...I personally have not seen a cockroach in ages, never seen a gator outside of a zoo, and the little baby lizards are actually quite cute if you would stop being such a liitle girl about it look at them.
Well I am sure I have ****** everyone north of the Mason Dixon line off, but really guys we are not all complete morans down here.

Wow Swirlything You confirmed my beliefs in alot of things. :nono:You coming from Indiana confirms alot. In regards to to the mysogistic culture; That is very much a carribean thing. Very common in the islands. Not right but it still takes place.
In regards to your racist and egregious statements about blacks not being able to form understandable English--That is in every culture and race. Can you say George W. Bush??
You may find some that may not have their own teeth and live in a trailer park; predominately whites--to each its own. Some like to drive the big pick up trucks And you have some that have earned degrees and use wisdom when it comes to finances --you find that in all races and cultures.
But I wouldn't tell my daughter--honey Just because we live in the subarbs and Billy Jo has the thickest southern accent, and we can barely understand her and has no intentions on going to college you can't befriend her. NO WAY!!!
I would suggest you to travel abroad so that you don't poison your daughter's young mind with incorrect depiction of various races and cultures.
Yes, we have alot of mexicans that are here illegally but due to that fact does that mean I would tell my children not to date nor befriend a mexican--NO???!! That is part of that ole south dixie mentatlity. I am teaching the next generation despite of what we may commonly see on tv or around us it may not always be the case.
In regards to your "Lack of value to fatherhood by blacks" that is generational and a large percentage can be found in that race-- but that statement is so general and sad. I have a very nice black family down the street and it is a very very intact home. Very similiar to the Obama's.:redpinkhe
The father is an Board Certified Anesthesiologist and the mother is a Professor of science. Both BLACK and have the same 2 kids from the same marriage. Married for 18yrs.
So let us live learn and grow from one another. Not pass egregious depictions b/c a few bad apples you may have run into.
But Florida isn't a bad state.

wow. there's this great "club" in the area, i think you'll fit right in. just grab your whitest bedsheets (cross burning is optional).
you say there is a distinct lack of culture, and then you put down the hispanic AND african-american culture (in one sentence, which is impressive).
i respect the culture, music and food that the puerto rican, mexican, african american, caribbean peoples have brought to florida. let us not forget the heavy vietnamese culture in orlando, as well (mmm, pho!). and due to so many transplanting to florida from the northeast, there is plenty of anglo-saxon influence (hello winter park!).
i truly enjoy florida, and i believe the state is what one makes of it.
p.s. i'm from upstate new york. :)

Good one!! So sad!!! I hope she doesn't have that mindset when taking care of a patient.
I like your "club" comment:bow:
OK, here's a little something from the Panhandle:
As for the person who says BSN's are better than ADN's: I've been both. My BSN program was just that - a bunch of BS. I learned community health, management and many of the other required courses I had to suffer through as OJT as an ADN-RN.
BUT, I'm not sorry I got the BSN, because it opened the door for the wonderful education I'm getting in my master's program. I wish to God I had this level of knowledge when I was bedside in the ICU.
My facility DOES pay differentials for BSN's, AND specialty certifications - of which I hold four.
Low IQ? I think not. I'm doing just fine in the Master's Program From Hell. (As it's affectionately known amongs my classmates! LOL!)
The pay stinks in Florida - it's a right-to-work state. The lousy wages are a tradeoff for other things: no state income tax, warm (ha!) weather year round.
But it's home to many of us.
Do I love it? You betcha.
I love it like I love my family and friends - DESPITE the flaws and imperfections. It's not a perfect state, and we have many challenges.
Oh, and the school system everyone loves to slam? My mother devoted 40 years of her life to that system, and taught thousands of children to read. Your public schools are what you put into them. If your child isn't getting what they need out of it, get your behinds in there and figure out why! It is ultimately YOUR job to determine that your child is getting the proper education according to your family's values, not the school's!
So I say to all the nurses who are obviously so miserable here: Being happy is a choice.
Would I like to make more money?
Absolutely.
Can they ever pay me what my years of experience and calm head in an emergency is worth?
Hell no.
No place in this country can pay us adequately for what we do.
I have made a choice to be happy here, and to define my happiness not by a paycheck, but by being kind to my patients and their families.
It makes me happy to be the one to pick up on the PE and have the CXR, 12-lead and ABG done and ready for the doc by the time he/she makes it in there to look at them...but already have looked at them myself, and have everything ready to rock that I know they're going to want.
It makes me happy to sit a dying patient's family down, and help them understand the process, so they won't be afraid when they see the end signs.
I have not once been sued, and I've worked in high risk areas my entire 15 years of nursing. Nor am I afraid of being sued, because I make it a point to develop a rapport with my patients and their families.
If you hate nursing in Florida, then do something else. Go back to school. Pursue what my husband terms "alphabet soup": credentials, credentials, credentials. Or get out of nursing altogether.
There. You have the Panhandle perspective. You may flame, or not - your approval is not necessary.I will continue in the same manner, regardless.

I can't believe I just read this..... WOW! I have one word to say "MOVE"! If that is how you honestly feel, why stay. We certainly won't miss you, ....need help packing?
I moved to florida 8 years ago, born and raised in the Bronx borough of New York and I have no regrets. The only thing I miss is the food, plays and shopping. I don't EVER want to have to commute to the city by train or bus with someone armpits in my face. Florida offers all the things that are important to me at the point in my life. I have a few friends that moved here from up north and they are miserable. They are always comparings Florida to New York, my reply is the same as above.... MOVE.

I think Florida is just a bit boring. Yes south of Tampa is very pricey. Clearwater is nice. I hear it is pricey there as well. New Tampa is nice but that will be a stretch for you from that area to get on the causeway.
I think Florida is very ideal for families. The cost of living is pretty fair in comparison to California or NY. You can find good paying jobs but you must really search for it.
As for as the people in this state--Just like everywhere else you have your very friendly and educated folks and you have those that aren't. You have your crime ridden areas, you must research that first. Location, location, location
In response to the post about me calling one a hillbilly--I don't go around being condescending and calling people that term. But there are quite a few country bumpkins here. Part of that "ole south mentality"
Off of Interstate 4 there is a HUGE confederate flag waving and you may find lots of that depending upon what area you chose to reside in. To each its own.
But hopefully you will like here. Good Luck
