Who's leaving nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Just wondering if anyone else is actively leaving or contemplating leaving the profession altogether. If so, I'm also curious as to what other fields/careers you're pursuing. I'm seriously considering returning to school to get my master's in library science. Anyone else in similar circumstances??

I have attempted to leave nursing a couple times. Entered a teaching program (then thought about the salary), Attempted entering X-ray technician program (didn't make the cut).

Now, I am going through orientation at a psych unit. So far, I like it.

I think for now I will give this place a try. If, not.......... sonography school, here I come.

Started law school Aug 07. However, that was the plan all along. I got into nursing so I wouldn't be broke while in law school.

I will at some point in the future. My hubby is presently working on his graduate degree, then I can go next. We're taking turns going to school. I am disappointed because I really thought I would enjoy nursing. Experienced co workers have told me that I am an excellent nurse and very thorough. They enjoy working with me. I still give 110% at work even if I don't fully enjoy it. I plan to keep moving around to find a niche while researching possibilities for the future. I had planned on pursuing an advanced degree in nursing, but why should I when I'm not thrilled with the basics??

I'm hoping to find a career where I can combine my past career of firefighting/ paramedic, law enforcement, and my BA in psychology and RN. I've had thoughts about getting a Masters degree in Emergency Management.

Still kicking ideas around though!!

The change takes place during the early part of next month, if all proceeds exactly as planned.

Commuter, I am so happy for you. I know we really don't know each other that well (I think we've exchanged a couple of posts, etc.), but I remember reading several of yours posts that talk about how completely miserable your job is. Having "been there", there is nothing worse than having your body and mind morph into a dread machine at the mere thought of going to work.

I really hope your new venture works out better for you!

Yup, me too... I have been slowly working on an MA in Clinical Psychology and have finally graduated; now I need to pass the licensing exam and find an internship and then I am through! Will find something in that field and get away from nursing once and for all!!!

Hello tinderbox,

Your post is very, very interesting, I actually have my library science degree and I'm in nursing school (LPN). So, I am doing the exact opposite of what you are going to do. I've been a librarian for several years now and have always wanted to be a nurse, so I've just decided to take the plunge and go for it.

I actually work part time as a librarian and a cna while in nursing school. I think eventually I will go into medical librarianship, which actually combines the two fields.

You can PM me if you like for info on grad school and/or librarianship, I would be glad to help you out.

Good Luck!!!!

TheCommuter; I wish you luck in your new position. Please begin a thread when you get settled to share your new experiences.

I doubt if I would leave nursing altogether, because essentially, this is all that I know. But, I am exploring other avenues in the medical profession that are less political and stressful. Thing is that I really, really hate school. I have also thought about becoming a physican therapy assistant, because; as the other poster mentioned, the pre-requisites were the same as RN, and I have all of them. I would probably get accepted immediately if I applied at my old community college. Not sure, though.

I "left" and went to school nursing. Less money but well worth it. Look around in nursing-there's lots of things you can do with your degree besides hospital nursing. Med-surg left me depressed, wiped out and miserable.

I am leaving nursing but it will be another 3 to 4 yrs from now. I am an LVN and I pretty much hate it I have tried everything from med surg which is awful and stressful to me not to mention overwhelming to home health visits the drving around all day was just irritating and LTAC which was ok about the best of all. I have never worked at a nursing home didnt feel the desire to. Its just not what I thought it would be think I thought I could save the world or something. But at most times I feel like I am running in circles. I am a book smart person very literal and sometimes in the nursing environment I feel its unorganized and allot of unnecessary foot work no matter how I try to prioritize the day. :smokin:BUt for weeks I have been seriously thinking about teaching. I know that dont make a whole lot but I think I would be happy. I love preparing things and teaching and speaking. I also have four children and I am like the neighborhood mom. I really enjoy them but hate to watch them so sick tried pediatric home health too. I have a job interview at a head start program as the nurse there and I am going to express my desire to teach and hopefully they will help me through school. Wish me luck!

I'm out, sadly. I've worked in acute hospital settings(ICU,CVICU,Burns). I got out for a while to pursue other things. When I got back into nursing the change was palpable. The horizontal violence and open hostility from other nurses and staff just makes an already difficult job completely impossible. In addition using the customer service model enables pts and their families to do whatever to the staff and we're just supposed to take it. We're not supposed to protect ourselves,we're completely expendable.:scrying:

i'm a new grad. i would like to leave but i have no other skills. i also have a hefty car payment to make. where else am i going to get paid $30+ an hour for a 2 year degree? ;) i enjoyed being a nursing student more than i enjoy being a nurse - which i find a bit odd. someone earlier in this post mentioned that the reason s/he went into nursing was so that s/he would not be broke during law school. in a way, i think i went into nursing so that i would not be broke and have something to fall back on. i still don't know what my niche is! but i don't really feel like nursing is it. hell, maybe this is just all new grad feelings and it's normal? i dunno...

some of nurses where i work have major attitudes - maybe if i were in a unit where everyone was team oriented i'd feel different. maybe it's the backache i have after walking around for 14 hours? hmmm!
