Which hospitals in NYC hire associate degree grads

I'm wondering this as well since at least half of the nurses I encounter in doctor's offices and in the ED are associate degree nurses!

From a quick and unscientific survey (rang up a bunch of RN friends working in Manhattan, *LOL*), I'd have to say the answer is not many of the top NYC healthcare systems are hiring ADN grands. However YMMV, as there does seem to be a difference between new ADN grads versus seasoned/experienced nurses with that degree.

Because of the many hospital closures over the past five there were lots of experienced ADN nurses looking for new gigs. This makes sense as associate grads have historically numbered BSNs in the NYC/NYS area. That being said many of one's friends from places such as Lenox Hill, Staten Island University, NYP and a few other local hospitals were basically all told to get their BSN by their employers.

Besides phycian's offices one sees lots of new graduate and experienced ADNs working in LTC/rehab and nursing homes.

Apply everywhere. You never know. However, from what I know...Beth Israel hires some of their own ASN grads from the Beth Israel nursing school. Also NYC HHC hospital hire ASN grads but only if you already work there...for example you "upgrade" from CNA to RN or LPN to RN (you worked as CNA or LPN and you later got degree and RN license) and then you have 3 or 4 years to get your BSN. I am a BSN grad who did not work in hospital previously and the Assistant Director that interview me at HHC emphasized that she is only hiring BSN and the only ones who get a pass with ASN is those who already work there and they will have to go for their BSN eventually.

So apply everywhere LTC, social service agencies, etc. And also start your BSN. It looks good if you are in the process of a BSN and you may get called for interview even if you dont have BSN yet...as long as you are in the process of it.

I just interviewed with PBISON and the interviewer was very candid (which I appreciate!) and told me that BI is not hiring their grads and they have significantly cut programs like externships, etc... I have an offer on the table from them but I'm worried about going the ADN route because it does seem so rough (I do plan to get a BSN ASAP no matter what).

I was hired with my adn but enrolled in bsn program. I was already an employee there so all i did was a transfer. my recruiter did tell me to complete my bsn within 5years or else they will have to let me go. they hire new grads though, last january about 10 of us were new grads and last month they hired 2 new grads on our floor

Did these new grads all have their four year degree, or enrolled towards their RN to BSN?

On another note have wondered what becomes of PBISON grads, that is if BI or even Continuum Partners system in general gives them preference in hiring.

When St. Vinny's closed BI did freeze external hiring to absorb some of the displaced nursing staff from that hospital.

From what I've learned speaking with PBISON and nurse managers at BI - historically yes, but currently no. Because of financial cuts the new grad training programs and externship opportunities for PBISON students have been cut and ties between the hospital and the school (which runs off an endowment separate from the hospital) are weaker than before. Basically, they can't promise much and I was told that they strongly recommended working as a CNA or PCA to get a foot in the door in hopes of getting a job after graduation. Not great news I'm afraid.

new grads that they hired were all bsn, i was the only one hired as rn-bsn

These are all friends of mine with ADN who have been employed in the last few months:

I have 2 friends who were employed by Bellevue and only one of them had experience as an LPN working in a doctor's office. The other had absolutely no experience or externships or volunteer work(they are both male so I wonder if that had anything to do with it)

A friend who works for Brookdale but was a social worker there(internal applicants get priority)

A friend who is a veteran and was working at the Manhattan VA as a medic but got an RN job at Woodhull

A friend with no experience employed by Elmhurst Hospital

*another ADN person I met at North Shore LIJ in Forest Hills

I also have a friend who worked for Columbia Presbyterian for a long time as a clerk an was even living in their housing... She got a position with them once she got her ADN , but she quickly resigned shortly after because she didn't feel safe taking care of so many patients... I guess the orientation wasnt long enough for her...

It's so frustrating! I have an ADN, doing my RN-BSN program now. Hope to graduate by next year! I've been applying to every position available! I don't know if it's a smart thing to do, but I'm desperate! :( I'm not giving up! It's always been a dream of mine to work in the big apple. I'm blessed to have my current position though on a med/surg unit with experience floating to tele units. Anyone got any tips to help my resume stand out from the BSN's? I feel like having those three letters (BSN) is the only way to stand out nowadays. Nursing politics...... :sniff:

just from my experience, you're going to be limited to the city (HHC) hospitals with the ASN degree, and even then it's only really going to happen if you externed or volunteered there (like I did along with several of my classmates)

NorthShore LIJ doesn't require BSN and they say that you just have to graduate from a BSN program within 5 years of hire, but in my experience, after applying to their facilities countless times with NO interview, they probably prefer BSNs (same with NY Methodist)

Maimonides, NYU, Mt. Sinai, Continuum (Beth Israel), and NYP Columbia/Cornell, or any of the specialty hospitals - HSS, Sloan Kettering, etc.... no way in hell you can get into those without at least a BSN unfortunately.
