Where is everyone working during school?

Published

i was wondering where you were all working while going to school. i'm working full time and doing pre reqs part time. i am currently doing marketing (going for nursing as "second career") and was thinking of applying to do clerical work in a doctor's office. perhaps to familiarize myself with the field and perhaps find an employer who maybe more flexible and understanding if school situations arise and maybe even learn a couple of things! :)

has anyone done this or have and thoughts as to why this may be a good/bad move?

thanks!

:yeah:

i work at home as a medical transcriptionist. super flexible hours, can work in between taking classes, and can be home for the kids in the afternoon. it's also a great education, i learn a ton of medical information and always know the typical treatments for differnt diseases and disorders, new meds, etc. i just wish i actually enjoyed the work, i really have to make myself sit and type. :crying2:

I work as a Unit clerk sometimes called Unit secretary, in the Emergency room in my town.

I work as an Admin. Asst/Secretary. Always have. I work for a large University. They know I am going back to school, and actually are very supportive, and created a 20 hour a week job for me (I was 40 hours a week before). It's awesome, I love this department.

I'm just hoping that they continue to be supportive once I am in the program, another 1-1.5 years from now. Currently I am on the waiting list for my ADN at a Community College, and taking my pre-requisites. Once I'm in the program, I'll have no control over my schedule, like I do now. I hope it will all turn out all right, I mean, they knew I was going back to school, and also University's I think, are more understanding to students.

Nursing is a 2nd career for me also. I was pursuing an Accounting degree before (albeit half heartedly...)

I hope it doesn't hurt me that I'm not working in the "medical side" of things. My job is very mentally and physically easy for me, so, I can concentrate more on school work. I hope I have enough time to learn what I need to in school and also in the real working hospital world. :)

I work as youth counselor at a residential treatment center for delinquent girls ages 12 to 18. I work 6 hours during the day on Wednesday, 10 hours overnight on Thursday and 12 hours overnight on Friday and Saturday. Will have plenty of time to study once I get in and I have plenty of hours saved so that I can take Wednesdays off when the time comes (am on the dreaded waitlist).

wow it seems like a lot of you have jobs in the medical field already or at least jobs that are flexible which is great! i may look into a receptionist or clerical work at a hosptial or doc's office. thanks everyone! :)

Specializes in Telemetry, OR, ICU.

I worked full-time [64 hrs/2 wk pay period] as Certified Surgical Technologist, AKA Scrub Tech, during my RN/ADN program. Plus, was a single dad with two teenage sons. Needless to say, finding sleep time was a luxury. That time period of my life was worse than USMC Boot Camp. :uhoh21:

I worked full-time [80 hrs/2 wk pay period w/call] as RN/ADN in the OR while enrolled in my UTMB, at Galveston, SON RN-BSN online program, which included 2-3 campus visits [3.5 hr drive from my home] per semester. Both sons out the house, so that hurdle was gone. I spent many hours on the :typing & again, not much time for sleep.

So, yes working while going thru RN program is possible. However, if accepted for the Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing I won't have to work d/t I'll be getting paid active duty pay as 1LT while in the program. Besides, at 44 yrs old I'm not getting any younger and need more beauty sleep than when I was younger. :chuckle

I start work as a CNA on weekend overnights and one weekday overnight come Tuesday. I'm really happy! I just got hired on today to the place I wanted. I have turned down two other job offers because they didn't feel right. Everyone thinks I am crazy, but it is not as crazy as it sounds.... I hope.

Specializes in LTC.

I'm working as a CNA/HHA in assisted living on overnights. A lot of down time to study. I'm only working part time though. To easily stressed out.

I'm working as a pharmacy tech while going to school. Full time for now...lol.
