So, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and some other random celebrities I've never heard of hit up the Peds hospital at Tufts to promote the all-ladies remake of Ghostbusters.
Apparently a bunch of people are really pissed, mainly saying its exploiting children who have never heard of Ghostbusters and obviously don't give a flying fart.
Yay?
Or nay?
They were there for entertainment and I'm sure kids liked the fact that they were all dressed up in costume with props. They dont have to know anything about the movie to enjoy the visitors. If anything, it allows the kids to be distracted from their illnesses for a moment. Do you really think children know these big time sports stars that do the same thing? Maybe a few of the boys who's fathers are fans but usually its the parents who want the pictures. Its also the parents who approve to have their pictures posted on the hospitals fb page.

Yeah, like the kid in the bed who looked miserable. He just looked so happy for the cast to be there.

You are grossly underestimating the popular culture knowledge and professional sports fanaticism that many children happily cling to. Especially those that might be chronically ill and need to develop more sedentary interests.
My son would likely looked as interested as the one solemn ill appearing child did, however I would not have consented to such a photo to be posted on FB. Many of my patients would have been less thrilled at this particular group as
A. These actors typically are not in movies watched by the elementary school & middle school population. Melissa McCarthy has appeared in quite a few PG-13/R movies due to adult language in the script.
B. There has been little publicity for this movie that is still in early production and not projected to be released until estimated July 2016--it's not current culture. A few of my patients would have been significantly more excited to meet the original cast, the StayPuff Marshmallow man, or Slimer as the visit could have been precluded by a showing of the classic 1984 Ghostbusters movie.
I don't fault the actors, but the PR department. They definitely chose some less than stellar photos to promote this visit combined with poorly anticipated movie remake.
Not long ago a group dressed up as Marvel Comic & DC Comic superheroes such as Spider-Man, Batman, The Flash and visited a children's hospital. Those photos were priceless. The characters were familiar to the patient population and definitely more appreciated than a group of actors not familiar to a typical pediatric population promoting a movie remake not coming out for a year with no video previews. There was also the photo published of a group of window washers dressed like superheroes at a children's hospital and the look of surprise & delight captured on the faces of the pediatric patients was beautifully priceless. I've seen well done visit publicity photos with pro sports players, popular music stars, and movie/tv actors familiar to the pediatric population.
Not to rain on this lovely celebrity smashing parade, but... "The actors showed up after the patients, knowing the movie was filming nearby, put signs up in their windows that spelled out,'Who ya gonna call?'"
Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig visited a children's hospital in full 'Ghostbusters' garb.

NurseKateC made a post about it already. But how the post has strayed I'm not surprised it's been double posted.
