Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!
I used to work with a woman named Mercedes--she pronounced it MER-sa-dees.. As to Porsha, well, there's a character in I-forget-which-Shakespeare-play named Portia. Maybe that's what they were trying for.
I think the car brand Mercedes was actually named after someone's daughter Mercedes. It's a pretty common Spanish name!
according to Wikipedia, yup, named after a daughter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_(car)
ok, can't fix the link for some reason, the last parenthesis won't stick to the URL! try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9rc%C3%A9d%C3%A8s_Jellinek
Modesty and Nemesis... 2 friends of my daughters
Someone I knew once - Bruce Wayne
Twins--Orangejello & Lemonjello
the strangest i have seen was an african-american who had twins and named them - get this - orangejello and lemonjello, we all cracked up over this at the nurses station. I was a senior nursing student at the time
I am still amazed that the Michaels and Jennifers are the most popular- heck, EVERYONE has personally known or known someone personally who has met the Jello twins!!! I can honestly say I have not- but I know I will someday, cuz I work in geriatrics, and they gotta be getting old by now!!!!!!!!!!!!

i also had a teen mom who named her child margarita......(sad).
margarita is a hispanic name for margarite. the baby may have been named after the drink which would be sad.
for my own. my kid has a normal first name, but harley for a middle name. just to be fun.
I know of a girl named Aquanette Hair...
My guess is her mom was a fan of AquaNet Hair Spray. I'll have to ask her about the origin of her first name one of these days.
