What's your motivation to graduate?

We all have our reasons for going to nursing school and I just read a thread about the 'weeding out' process. I wonder if those who quit in Fundamentals are just not as committed. We all know how much time and effort is required and how tough it is. What keeps you all going? I'm curious to know...

For me...even as an adult, I would hate to have to tell my parents that I failed (my dad specifically) and how will I ever pay my student loans back?! ;)

:yeahthat: Last semester I was so nervous I was not going to pass the final and could not even image telling my parents (haha even though I am 21) When I set my mind to something I like to see it all the way through. I WILL graduate! :)

I have to graduate, I'm waaay to committed to quit now even though today was my first day. I have school loans to pay off, I have bought $1000 worth of books, supplies, and uniforms (and that was just the required stuff), my husband sold his truck and turned off 2 of our retirement plans so we could afford $800 a month in daycare, and he's giving up his mornings off everyday of the week to watch our youngest child since he's only in part time preschool. My whole family has rearranged their lives, and given up all items of luxury so I can go to school so I can't let them down!

Specializes in ER.

I am selling my house so I can live in apartment closer to school, I sold my mustang which was like giving up my first born, my boyfriend and I broke up (less stress) and I'm quitting my full-time job..... all so I can attend nursing school.

Getting a degree has always been important to me, but I seriously never thought I'd give up almost everything I've worked for just to go to school. So I have no choice but to go to school, graduate, and like it. ;)

Specializes in NICU, High-Risk L&D, IBCLC.

I'm with all of you regarding the student loans and having to face everyone who has supported me through school if I just gave up or didn't graduate. And above all, what keeps me motivated is knowing how great of a career nursing is and how badly I want to be a part of it!

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.

Student loans, two babies to take care of, student loans, want very badly to be a nurse, student loans, car note, student loans, I like eating, student loans, I don't want to have to tell everyone I failed, and I didn't forget student loans, did I?

All the tons of money I have already spent on pre-reqs, tuition, books even before I was accepted into nursing school. The crazy amount I have soent in the last two weeks for same. The loans I have taken out. The fact that my kids told everyone at their school I'm in nursing school, so now their parents know. How badly my family needs for me to start bringing in income again, eventually. And finally....this is my second shot at NS. I was 17 the first time, and I quit 2.5 years into a BSN program. It broke my parents' heart, as well as embarrassed them. Back then, they were younger and I didn't care what they thought. Now, they are old, and what they think means the world to me. No grumpy instructor in the world will ever make me feel as bad as what failing this would do to them. I cannot, cannot fail nursing school.

Hey Suzi, my name is Lisa.....when i started i believe how it started was like a lightbulb going on, i believe my faith has led me in this direction, i truly believe that, b/c to commit yourself to just the education alone takes as you know, lots of time, it really is ANOTHER JOB. I work two jobs now, im single, work 6 days a week and i have two kids, it is very difficult b/c you have to choose to either stick it out and study, or choose the other option, which is to sleep. I take it one day at a time, b/c to look at the big picture it is very overwhelming. I save vacation time in order to be able to take the time off for hospital rotations, im in my second year of Nursing, my instructors have been awesome so far.....so im hoping it will be that way for the next two semesters. Im excited, but then again, its gonna be A WHOLE LOTTA STUDYING. thats about how im feelin' at the end of the semester.

Specializes in cardiac/education.

Two reasons:

1. I don't want to be a quitter and I don't want to feel like a failure to my family.

2. I couldn't bear to see all this freakin' torture for the last three years go to waste!:chuckle

That said, I am pushing through concrete now. So tired, want OUT! Also, what I have seen of nursing and the medical professions so far has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. I wonder if I was very disillusioned in the beginning. Did I make the right choice or is what I see now all there is going to be in the future for nurses?:crying2:

So now, I don't even know if it is what I want anymore so that is making it very hard to sacrifice my time studying and writing papers. I am just trying to finish something I started and realize if it isn't what I want, well, I'll have the degree and can move on to the next thing!:chuckle Hey, I have already been in school for 10 yrs. What's another 10?????

Specializes in Urgent Care.

I need to finish not only for myself, but for my family. They want this just as badly as I do. I can't wait to work full time and provide for them :)

Specializes in L & D.

In my binder this semester I'm carrying the brochure for the prestigious private girls' high school that is located in our neighborhood. Although our daughters are only 4 and 7 years old, I want to be able to send them there for high school. They both attend a private school now, and I'd like to be able to help my husband with their tuition. There is nothing more important to us than giving the girls the very best education we can!

Specializes in ER/Trauma.

About $65,000+ worth of debt and the fact that my parents would lose their home.

Besides, I like food and wouldn't like starving.

That's good enough motivation for starters (and it did help me graduate too!) :)
