Just curious, what's the meanest, rudest, nastiest thing a patient has said to you? Tonight I had someone tell me they wished I would die and go straight to he!! Then they said they hoped it rained everywhere I went. They also told someone they were a son of a b. What's your best line?
Not as bad as some of the ones I've read in this thread but here goes:
Was taking care of a younger patient who had to have her foot (and later whole leg) amputated due to her out of control diabetes. It was at the beginning of my nursing career so I was very much trying to be a people pleaser. She was getting 1 mg of Dilaudid every 2 hours. I was doing a pretty good job of keeping on top of that as she would call right on time every time. Of course, I wasn't able to maintain that the whole twelve hours so the last time I came in I ended up being late by 15 minutes. She was furious and her brother was livid. She kept saying how horrible of a nurse I was, berating me every which way and saying that I didn't care about her. Her brother immediately threatened me by saying "if you want to start something then we can. Our aunt is a judge so we can take this on up". I have no idea where the hell all that came from but I didn't engage. In my head I was thinking "bring it on. Husband is a lawyer and I'm sure you won't get that leg back even if you sue me". They ended up requesting a different nurse because apparently I wasn't good enough.
Seriously. Sometimes you're just at the front lines of the anger even when it's not your fault.
I feel like psych patient threats and insults don't really count... I've had patients say they were going to eat my face, or track me down and kill me... manic patients all know the President, or the CEO of the hospital, or they're a senator, and they're all going to get me fired for holding them illegally. All of the manic patients. Although I did have a guy say, "Just because you have highlights in your beard doesn't mean you get to tell me what to do." I'd never heard that before. My hair is brown and my beard is reddish, but it was so random that I just said, "... well, technically that's true..." but then his dead father who communicates with him through a communicator in his brain told him I was okay so he took his meds. So, it all worked out.
We had a patient who was obsessed with one of the male therapists, but hated all the other men. We had a therapist named Manuel who she called Man-hole and she wouldn't let him near her because she said he was gay. We still call him Man-hole.
Prince of a patient overheard a co-worker ask me when my spouse was returning from overseas (he's military).
Walked into the room and the Prince said I hope your husband dies there like all the other baby murderers.
I just walked out and told the Charge, he needed a new nurse. His doctor filled up the discharge paperwork right then.

93 year old patient said, "I'm going to pee all over the floor and make your Mom clean it up." My mom is a retired nurse, but this pt never met her.
