On the more upbeat side of nursing, what's your favorite type of patient?

Mine is a cheerful, independent, and interesting old lady or old man, the older the better, who is sharp as a tack. I really like to find out more about them and their life experiences. I like the intelligent ones who have had interesting lives and careers, and who are well adjusted and personable.

:lol2: :jester: :roll :D :chuckle love your response. im still laughing!!!!!!!

paralyzed, sedated, and stable with no scans, taps, tests and/or any other scheduled procedure that would necessitate transport.

and no family members.

and there are any number of other open beds meaning my chance for an admission is no worse than 20%.

and i'm working next to nurses whose assignments are equally unchallenging.

and there's an inservice at which chocolate cookies will be served.

intubated and sedated.... love it...no call lights...scheduled meds to help them to get off the vent on dayshift. we bath our vent patients on nights...helps us with skin assessment. next favorite is an mi pt...makes me think and anticipate the next treatment.

:chair: this reply may get me in trouble...but...you did ask.

intubated, obtunded orphans with no friends! they're my absolute favorite. second favorite would be someone who is actively trying to die. guess i'm still an adrenalin junky!

Those patients on the other end of my Triage phone line that are sick,I really can help them. Plus I'm not exposed to all those cooties I have been exposed to over the last 30 years or so. Still gonna wash my hands but just cos I wanna.I really did enjoy my NICU and ER patients, but Im right where I want to be now. No more :barf01:

I miss working in the mental health unit...work was NEVER, EVER boring because you just never know what's gonna happen when those doors lock behind you...I rarely had to clean up bodily fluids (not that I mind too much now; it just gets OLD sometimes! lol)...and we all seemed to work better as a team than just about any other unit I've floated to since!:lol2:

My favorite pt is the one that's willing to get well & not just lay there wanting drugs waiting for someone to do everything for them even though they're quite capable. And, I agree, continence is a definate plus!!! :D

I like the crusty ones with wicked a wicked sense of humor.

Specializes in Infusion, Oncology, Home Care, Med/Surg.
walkey, talkey, happy, continent, compliant, day of discharge, dnr if they need to be

you asked, i said

:yeah:

Well said! same here and maybe pleasantly confused (just not the ones who are pleasantly ringing call bell every minute) :roll

Specializes in CMSRN.

I also prefer the saucy pt's. I love people who "dish it out" but can take it too.

It is very refeshing to have a pt who makes jokes and is very engaging. They have a personality that comes across like they know and like everyone, and love life.

I prefer the patients that when you get to work all you have to do is get them to sign their discharge instructions....
