What's your favorite type of patient?

On the more upbeat side of nursing, what's your favorite type of patient?

Mine is a cheerful, independent, and interesting old lady or old man, the older the better, who is sharp as a tack. I really like to find out more about them and their life experiences. I like the intelligent ones who have had interesting lives and careers, and who are well adjusted and personable.

I prefer mine breathing!

As of late- I tend to prefer the intubated, sedated ones. No backtalk, no complaining and they are truly sick and need alot of my attention. I actually get to think on these patients and be the MD's eyes and ears. I can be a patient advocate since they cannot.

I love the compliant patients and those who don't ring the call bells every five minutes.

I like the challenged noncompliant patients. I practice my therapeutic communication techniques and treasure what I learn from them. Since I am an impatient nurse, I would like to learn to be patient with them otherwise, I get fire from my job.

A nice fresh hemodynamically unstable, bleeding double valve. Cold, acidotic, with an out of whack coag panel and a CI of 1.5. And their only family member lives in another state. I'm sick, I know.:redbeathe

Some days my favorite pts are the ones that:

1. refrain from swearing at me for no reason

2.They and their family aren't rude to me

3. Their Dr isn't and a** and the Dr actually knows what he/she is doing.

and continent is always nice.

A mom having her 2nd (or more) baby and who:

1) knows how to breastfeed

2) knows that babies cry

3) knows what to do about #2.

Or a baby who:

1) knows how to suck, whether from a breast or a bottle

2) remembers to breathe

3) is considerate and doesn't poop outside his/her diaper.

A married couple having thier first baby, with a stable life, who want the baby, who knows that labor hurts, and that the baby they are about to have is the most special gift they will ever get. Love those moments!

Intubated and sedated.... Love it...no call lights...scheduled meds to help them to get off the vent on dayshift. We bath our vent patients on nights...helps us with skin assessment. Next favorite is an MI pt...Makes me think and anticipate the next treatment.

Exactly what I was thinking when I started reading this thread!!!! And I couldn't agree more! Other than that, I'm like Earle, I love the fiesty tiny old ladies that cuss a blue streak at you and have no idea what they are saying. So cute!!!!!!! I also like the cutey patootie old men who are almost embarrassed to ask for anything and are grateful to me and show it.

Oldies but goodies with a good sense of humor. I like when pts teach me as much as I teach them. The "true" cooperative pt.

Also, I like the ones who make me work for a smile.
