I was wondering...what makes you a great nurse? Do you have little tips/tricks that you use? Do you sit down with each and every patient? Do you get compliments? If so, on what?
I was hoping to start a thread where you can "pat yourself on the back" so to speak. Since we are all pretty much anonymous on this site, it's a great place to do that.
So, to all of you WONDERFUL nurses out there, what makes you WONDERFUL?

I was told I'm great with patient's families. I always make sure they are in the know about everything that's going on, give them time to ask questions, and ask if there is anything I can do for them.
My patient also almost always tell me I'm so good at giving their SQ heparin. "you're good at that, I didn't even feel it!" haha I always toss it up to the needle size but hey, it's nice to hear :)

I have yet to meet a person I could not straight cath in 1 try! (The reason I became so great at it is the scents you breath in while working in "That" area )

I treat patients like people, NOT patients.

Apparently I'm good with "difficult families". I always find myself signing up for primaries (NICU) that no one else wants because the family causes trouble, I've never had any trouble with any of them...

i'm told i'm really good at explaining things, because i always remember what it was like to be clueless and i keep trying different ways until i know for sure they got it.

I'm a great advocate for patients. If I need the Dr to assess someone, I get him/her to do that. Our Drs never like to be called.
I see the person, not their diagnosis. My patients are listened to and respected.
My patients report I'm great at giving painless injections, especially IMs.

One doc called me tenacious and then another called me a bunch of things, I heard a lot of different words that I can't repeat on this forum while I was doing my aghast face. Why do I always get the perverse docs ... oh yea about me; well my talent is to assist people with their last journey in life. I am uniquely qualified for it.
I have the ability to take anyone, any family, any diagnosis, any treatment plan and make it work especially for the individual that is passing on ... after all that's what it's all about; that one person's last journey here on this earth. I always design the plan around the person themselves and what they want. I got a lot of friends waiting in several different heavens and planes of existence, as well as a pod of Orcas living in the Pacific in case it turns out to be the reincarnation thing.
