What did you want to be when you grew up?

And did it have to do with nursing?

I had 3 things I wanted to be: A nurse, a scientist, and a special education teacher. I cannot remember a time in my life where I wanted to be something different.

I'm kind of all 3 :) I did a lot of work with special needs people as a nurse. The scientist part comes through with using your nursing judgement and trying to put the pieces together with the Dr. to make a clear diagnosis :) Also, I am attaining my degrees in Psychology and Sociology... social sciences...

A lot of nurses I speak with have wanted to be a nurse, teacher, or vet... So, I'm interested: What did you want to be (who knows, maybe I'll do a research paper on it... LOL)?

Specializes in SICU.

writer, model, architect, i flip-flopped between these for the longest time.... I kind of stumbled into Nursing.... :)

I wanted to be a cop. I tried so hard to get into any branch of the military to be an mp. I had a horrible fracture when I was 14 that left me permanently disabled and I have plates/screws in my elbow for life. It sucks but, I look at it like if that didn't happen I wouldn't be pursing a nursing career right now either. And I'm glad to have found something I love so much.

Specializes in Mental Health, Medical Research, Periop.
I wanted to be a superhero, lol! Actually, Invisible Girl... Take down bad guys while invisible....hmmm... maybe I shouldve been an undercover cop. LoL!

:dancgrp:

I should add when I got older (high school age) I wanted to be a psychologist, a writer, and a motivational speaker. I still love to write, although it's more of a hobby now. I still have a goal of becoming a motivational speaker :D. I am so glad a relative of mine introduced nursing to me, it allows me to be a little of all the things I dreamed of (superhero through healing hands, psychiatrist through listening skills, writer though valuable documentation, and motivational speaker through providing realistic hope).:redpinkhe

Specializes in PICU, ICU, Hospice, Mgmt, DON.

I was very star struck as a little girl and wanted to be a "Broadway Star" :starornament:...can you tell by my screen name?...then for years a Vet, then a Doctor. I never, ever considered becoming a nurse. It wasn't until I was well into adulthood--teaching in college that I sort of "fell" into nursing school...the rest is history. I still laugh sometimes when I realize I ended up as a nurse.:nurse::lol2:

I wanted to be an artist. My family always thought I was going to become a professional artist because I would win all the drawing contests at my school. I even won a cruise trip for my family and I was also featured on the Boston Globe and I was only in Pre K! I'm now 28 years old and love staying within the medical field. I'm a CNA, Pharmacy Tech and a Nursing Student. I have a feeling that I'm going to love Nursing :nurse:

I wanted to be in the FBI and be a Forensic Detective. (back before all the shows on it) I got to tour the FBI academy in Quantico, VA and fell IN LOVE!

I also wanted to work in Child Protective Services. I realized this wasn't a good idea because I would probably be on the run fleeing from the FBI when I kidnapped all the abused kids.

I also wanted to teach Middle School.

I finally decided on Nursing after many years experience as a patient. I always wanted to do something that impacted peoples lives and made a difference, after my patient experience I figured Nursing could fit into many of the things on my check list. I would eventually like to be a Clinical Instructor and Preceptor and maybe a Nursing instructor if I have the mojo to get my Masters. I would also like to be a SANE nurse.

In case you don't know, or if you do, I will remind you, there is a specialty of Nursing that is Forensics. It deals with crimes, ie rape victims, and others, and sounds like it may suit you. Especially with the CPS angle, Google Forensic nursing, I'm not sure if it is a certificate program or how long, I looked into it a few years ago. I know you would work w/law enforcement closely.

Just thinkin.

Specializes in cardiac-telemetry, hospice, ICU.

I wanted to be a Dr, but my college grades weren't good enough (hormone toxicity). But I mostly did NOT want to be a soldier and go to Vietnam! I lucked out in the draft and finished grad school. After 2 careers I am now in nursing school following my old interests. Ain't life funny?

:yeah: I am having a blast reading it!! About half are along the "usual" line of science, teacher, vet, Dr., nurse....

Some are quite funny . INVISIBLE GIRL!!! I love it.. and you were able to tie everything into being a nurse...

Funny how almost every one was an interest in a profession of compassion, nurturing, helping...

Some blow my mind at how far AWAY from nursing they are... architect? Broadway Star? Lipstick namer... HAHA!!! I *LOVE* that one... Textiles?? Wow - not crafting fabric... but, you do craft... :) And 2 (sounds like very TALENTED) artists!! Fabulous!

Jennifer - I am glad you were able to realize your dream. As someone said, it is NEVER too late... Congrats. Sorry you had a nay-sayer mom... It is sad a mother would dash dreams like that.

Planetarium... haha!!!

Simmy ~ There are a LOT of travel nursing options... sadly I think home health is the ONE that really isn't an option :(

Mark - I just finished my Micro class with someone who has been a cop for 10+ years, and a cop that specializes in forensics. They both wanted to become a nurse... So, who knows - this may be what you were meant to do in the very beginning, anyhow :) Glad you are able to see the positives.

Specializes in ER.
When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a swim coach and a bus driver. Starting in jr high, I really wanted to be an archaeologist. I even majored in anthropology with the initial intention of going on to grad school for archaeology when I got my bachelors.

Archaeology was my first passion as well, when I was 10 y.o. I had a subscription to Smithsonian. It still is my passion and if I wanted a solitary life without marriage or kids in the equation, that would be a perfect job. Working with the Egyptian antiquities guy, Salahi?? AWESOME.
