What is the upstate NY job market like?

Published

I'm graduating in August 2010 with a BSN. I'm in NYC now but what I'm hearing about the job market isn't that encouraging. I'm expanding my search outside of NYC. I'd be willing to consider anything within 100 miles, for starters. (I have nothing against other states either, but it's a little too overwhelming to consider job hunting from a distance.) I have looked at the listings for a few hospitals in Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties and they don't say that experience is required. If there are any members here who live/work in those areas, can you tell me what the job market is like? What is it like to live/work there?

I'm graduating in August. From what I hear, it takes until October to get the Approval to Test. If I want to move north, does it make sense to just plan a move for September and then worry about the job search? Will hospitals even consider my application while I'm still in school?

Also, which cities in the region are attractive places to live--rents not too high, family friendly, not too deserted?

Roller, I pm-ed you.

Chaya, check your PMs.

Some hospitals will hire you if you are ELIGIBLE to take the test. It's always a good idea to apply early. It can take as long as two months (in my case) for your hospital of choice to contact you with an interview offer. So, Go for IT! In terms of 'attractive" areas to live/work in, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Albany, and Binghamton are attractive areas to live and the cost of living is really low. I would not plan to move out here until you have landed a secure position.

AlmostabubbieRN, do you still have jobs for new graduate where you are? I am trying to find a job anywhere.

Orange county is not upstate NY I have lived in orange county, albany and now in rochester and the job market for nurses is extremely tough around here. I think nyc has it worse but most ppl who have not landed a job by last month, arent getting one here. I applied for positions in February and most places picked who they wanted by the end of march with a couple exceptions. One of the nurse recruiters at Strong hospital (6th largest employer in New York State) had told me she felt bad for those applying right now because they have more applicants then positions. Rochester General Hospital nurse recuiter stated that unless you worked at their hospital already they was no point in applying because they had nothing open. Highland hospital had no positions opened this year and Unity Hospital might be the only one really hiring at the time(most people know someone who works there if they got a job there but not always the case) There are approximately 6 nursing schools in this area so there is a lot of competition for the jobs. Needless to say I would line up a job before coming to upstate NY, the cost of living is great up here and the real-estate market really gives you a bang for your buck. I think your shot is better up here though then down in nyc...GL!

I live in upstate,ny and I would try onondaga county hospitals. I graduated with an associates and only applied to 2/5 hospitals in this city and was interviewed and offered the job at both hospitals 2 months before I even graduated and they all let you work on permit. I'm expecting a baby and was put on restriction so I can't work until after I deliver so I'll be reapplying in September/October but look at Syracuse hospitals, the university area is a good place to live as well as they have many suburbs surrounding which are nice and only 10-15 min away. Good Luck wherever you decide

Openings in Rochester, but they are filling fast. My Hospital has been using travelers, but they have been told they will not be needed after September, as they expect all vacancies to be filled by then.:nurse:

Last I heard, Vassar Brothers in Poughkeepsie was hiring. A few people in my class were hired right after graduation.

Albany med is always hiring new grad. They got a new grad orientation once a month. I always see a different group each month. The only down side is this hospital pays really low.. but if you are looking for a place to start. Albany med might be a good starting point.

How long do they take to get back to you? I applied for a few positions a few weeks ago and haven't heard squat. Looking at Ellis, St. Peter's, and AMH now.

Specializes in Outpatient/Clinic, ClinDoc.

I am not a new grad, but I work for St. Peter's, first in ambulatory care, now as a college nurse. I love St. Peter's! The pay isn't so hot (especially for ambulatory care), but the people are great. I haven't seen any new grad opportunities lately, however.

Most of the new grad opportunities I see in my area (I live in saratoga county) are in the LTC or similar type areas. We have a lot of LTC around here as well as developmentally disabled homes.

I do miss California when it comes to pay!
