What is the upstate NY job market like?

U.S.A. New York

I'm graduating in August 2010 with a BSN. I'm in NYC now but what I'm hearing about the job market isn't that encouraging. I'm expanding my search outside of NYC. I'd be willing to consider anything within 100 miles, for starters. (I have nothing against other states either, but it's a little too overwhelming to consider job hunting from a distance.) I have looked at the listings for a few hospitals in Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties and they don't say that experience is required. If there are any members here who live/work in those areas, can you tell me what the job market is like? What is it like to live/work there?

The pay is half of what you get in nyc. their are mostly long term care positions. and rn' make about 25 dollars a hour. not two much more but i guess it depends on your experience and where you apply.

agency makes more but still not as much as nyc

I live in upstate,ny and I would try onondaga county hospitals. I graduated with an associates and only applied to 2/5 hospitals in this city and was interviewed and offered the job at both hospitals 2 months before I even graduated and they all let you work on permit. I'm expecting a baby and was put on restriction so I can't work until after I deliver so I'll be reapplying in September/October but look at Syracuse hospitals, the university area is a good place to live as well as they have many suburbs surrounding which are nice and only 10-15 min away. Good Luck wherever you decide

Futrldnrse,

Did you go to OCC? I'm in the Syracuse area also and haven't started school yet but still quite curious about hiring conditions in this area (getting ahead of myself). Great to hear that the hospitals let you work before graduation! What positions were you offered? Did you find a job in 2010?

Hope you (& your baby) are well! I'd love to hear from a local nurse :)

There are plenty of opportunities in Ulster, Dutchess and Orange counties of NY for a new BSN graduate. I also relocated to get an opportunity to work in a hospital. I was recently hired at The Kingston Hospital in Kingston, NY (Ulster) and recieved my license this past March '10. I will highly recommend you start researching the area, hospitals, and apply early if you are serious about relocating. I'm not sure where you live now, but upstate, NY is quite a change from NYC ("downstate"):D. Congratulations and good luck on all your future endeavours!!!

HI, I am thinking about applying to Kingston or Benidictine Hospital. I am currently preparing to take the exam at the end of this month. Do you think I should apply now or should I wait until I get my license? I am interested in neonetal intensive care but I have never seen any of those position posted. How do I go about applying for such position? What is it likE working there? Any advice would help thanks in advance.

Anything north of the Bronx is upstate. You know that, dear. ;)

Thank you.

My first job was in the Bronx. I am from "upstate" as in monroe co. In orientation we stated where we were from. One colleague asked if I communted. Its all in the mindset!!!:yeah:

every new grad that I know that has gotten a job has looked upstate after being unsuccessful in the city.
