Something to understand what nurses think about re the Current News and their opinions!

I thought he was talking about Muno.  You're too old to have children in school.  Grandchildren maybe.  LOL

I do have grandchildren in school in several different states.  Maybe he was talking about Muno, the references are generally unnecessarily cryptic given that multiple people respond to his posts and he only addresses a couple of us directly. I'm certainly not the only American to notice that republicans seemed much more likely to want to gamble with covid illnesses for children.

Pediatric hospitals were never overwhelmed from covid.  My peds hospital ED went from 250-300 visits a day to 40 to 50, in a matter of 3 or 4 days in March 2020.  We became overwhelmed in late Summer of 2021 when kids started sharing their cooties again and going out doing physical activities, and it continues.  Earlier this week, we had a record day for April.   Covid is barely mentioned, for quite some time now.

I almost took a travel position in your neck of the words in December, at Johns Hopkins in St Petersburg.  They told me they were experiencing the same kind of pattern.

Peds travel jobs went from being canceled in 2020 to unheard of rates in late Summer/ early fall 2021.

This discussion started with another member deflected from the math textbook discussion to imply Republicans don't care about kids dying from covid.  It's not that, obviously.  It's that they and most of society weighs risks vs benefits.  There have definitely been tragic negatives to schools shutting down, mask mandates in schools, etc.  The left seemingly ignores that.

https://www.CPR.org/2021/05/25/covid-mental-health-childrens-hospital-colorado/

All for a virus that had far less risk and serious consequences for children than for them to travel in automobiles on a regular basis. And a vast majority of those children effected by covid are not the "healthy", and could be as negativly effected by a flu, RSV, a UTI even, etc.

Notice that those here who criticize Republicans for opinions on school related covid issues only criticize Republicans.  They never actually reveal their own opinions.  They just criticize.  One here, has children.  Was he or still in favor of covid restrictions and mandates for school children?

All true.  I switched to talking about overall covid conditions about covid in general when I talked of hospitals being overwhelmed.

The article I mentioned stated 22,000 thousands kids hospitalized with covid and surely our healthcare system absorbed them if not easily, not without being overwhelmed.  The unknown was how bad was it going to get and what can we do to stop it.

The hospital you mention where I live did have an uptick in admissions but they handled it well.  They had a death of a 10 year old that made the news.  But even one death caused concern among parents because she was healthy, "what if it were my child".

I do think the people in favor of mitigation and lockdown are indeed weighing the risks and benefits. People are well aware of the mental health consequences of lockdown, isolation, harm to business.  They just have a different risk tolerance and think that's better than death.  We've seen it here in discussions.

I think when it came to children people might have been too cautious too long.  But it's children people have a "better safe than sorry attitude" when it comes to children.   At first there wasn't much resistance from the public and much demand for lockdown universally and Republicans were in charge.

If I were a parent of a college student that was healthy and vaccinated I would demand my money back from schools that made them stay home last September.

Those were interesting times. In March to April 2020 while covid was ravaged the Northeast we were struggling with low census and being able to find hours.  When it hit us that Summer, by then all lock downs were over, the opposite, we were overwhelmed and had to work overtime.  Next Summer same thing.  We seem to follow the NE and there seems to be an uptick in cases in the NE but they are handling it.  So I'm thinking we'll see an uptick here this Summer.   I think now the virus is smart in that it's learned how to spread fast and not kill so many of it's hosts so it can live.

Floridian parents are an interesting lot.  Their kids are hearty enough to go to the classroom and not wear masks, but too delicate to read To Kill A Mockingbird.    There is a group called Red Wine & Blue that was started several years ago of mothers that want an "accurate and honest education" for their children.  An accurate education that deals with our racist, homophobic and sexist past and present at age appropriate levels is fair and I believe necessary otherwise it's going to continue.

Speaking of education, I've mentioned the world "grooming" being thrown around in certain conservative circles and by politicians as it applies to how homosexuals and the left want to "indoctrinate" their children.

Quote

The most prominent slurs center on accusations that LGBTQ people and their allies are pedophiles, using the word “grooming,” which the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children definesas when “someone builds a relationship, trust, and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.”

The term has been weaponized online, and it now appears almost constantly on many social media platforms. Data from the social media platform Reddit analyzed by Jeremy Blackburn, an assistant professor of computer science at Binghamton University in New York who studies online extremism, found about a 100 percent increase since the beginning of the year in discussion of “grooming” in conjunction with various LGBTQ slurs starting in early March and accelerating in mid-to-late March.

I mentioned to my best friend this phenomenon and my disappoint in millennial parents whom I had such high hopes for in how they would raise their children to be compassionate to others and learn of people that are different from them, and how they have been treated.

He said it well:  "Indeed, "grooming" is one of the many tools in the Republicans' orificenal of culture war tactics.  Creating and then exploiting people's fears has been shown to be effective in forming/solidifying people's attitudes and behavior and is stranger that's no stranger to authoritarians. Many parents' worst fear is that harm will come to their children, so the "grooming" scare has endless possibilities for manipulating them, especially coupled with "parents' rights," a phrase I think DeSantis coined.  It just goes to show every generation is not savvier than the one that preceded it.  I am all around disgusted--with the Republicans for what they have become and with the Democrats for their impotence in dealing with that."

It sounds like your friend understands the purpose and use of propaganda.  It's unfortunate that the democrats get blamed for not saving people from propaganda.

How, exactly, do we deal with the Republican slurs?  Is it the Democratic Party's responsibility to re-educate Americans on the power of manipulators?  They don't CARE about critical thinking.  How do we turn the ship around for half of the country?

I don't know exactly but it seems their message of fear of harm to children is getting heard louder and clearer than the message of fair and accurate education.  Seems you can't reason with some people.

There's a photo going around the internet and I can't post it, but it's two scantily clad females (you see their butts from behind) holding a "F-bomb Biden" flag a man in front of  the flag kneeling and flipping the bird, and six prepubescent children kneeling with him also flipping the bird.

Seriously how what kind of message is going to be heard by such parents?

We are a country that are 1/2 mental and ethical defectives.  It's impossible to turn half of the country around.  The ship is too heavy to change direction.  Trump fiddled while Washington burned.

Interesting article about the dilemma of using "sin taxes" to fund government programs.

How do you identify the two halves?  And what behavior are you referring to when you classify them as being "mental and ethical defectives."

And are you staying this as opinion, or as fact?  If the latter, please cite credible sources verifying this?  If the former, as I suspect, what are you hoping to gain with such an inflammatory statement?

IMO, anyone who still supports Trumpsters at this point is a mental and moral defective.  Anyone can't see the symptoms of this corruption in our society, is just looking the other way from the events of our times.  We always had plenty of warning about a constitutional crisis in the coming election BEFORE Trump was even elected and here we are with a Republican party not calling out the the disrupters in their midst.  If you don't know who they are, you must not be reading the news.  The FACTS are that these people exist in our own legislatures and are quoted on a daily basis.  Many of the Democrats are also doing a disservice to us because they refuse to compromise.  They are merely idiots but not evil enough to accuse their own party members of participating in drug fueled orgies.

As I thought.

I recently posted a link to an opinion piece about Trump Depravation Syndrome.  Here is the most recent example that backs that up.

Why is this a news story?  Was anything new learned?
