But, you're right. It looks like Abbot was borrowing from the liberal playbook, this time. It was badly executed and backfired.
I'm going to call you out on this. I won't say that liberals don't react to feelings, it's quite clear they do.
However, they don't have a license on fear-based rhetoric reactions. Off the top of my head, I might cite the so-called don't say gay legislations here in Florida. Why was this instituted? There was practically zero, and no politician when asked could come up with an example, where homosexual and gender was being taught in the classroom to kids that age, never mind the harm that it caused. Again here in Florida after Trump lost the election they played on feelings and revamped some of the voting laws, this right after DeSantis claimed that Florida had the best laws in the country already.
Abbot acted straight out of the conservative playbook.
All is my opinion of course.

What liberal playbook is that? You should be specific.
Historically, authoritarian personalities benefit when the population they wish to rule experiences emotionally charged feelings...like fear or anger. That's why they use propaganda and fear mongering about immigrants and others who they claim threaten their laws and cultural order. There are colorful examples in relatively recent history.

Touche. I withdraw my "liberal playbook" comment.

It is this persistent action, taking national politics and local legislation down right wing authoritarian pathways, that reflects the Trump influence and represents a growing threat to our republic.

Thank. you and I withdraw my "conservative playbook" comment.
I was thinking and should have said "political playbook". It's just what politicians do. They react to the emotional state of people sometimes. I mentioned this when I gave my opinion about the "defend the police' legislation. They were reacting without giving a whole lot of thought to it because the entire country was in an uproar and liberal sentiment towards the police was low. The other side of the coin was so called "anti-riot laws" (again Florida) when the sentiment that the protestors were setting the country ablaze when there were no BLM riots here.
Find this press release from FL Board of Education highly inflammatory....in keeping with the FL Governors edicts. "71% textbooks rejected for grade levels K-5." Publishers create textbooks to appeal to largest majority of states to make $$ for their business. Seems like many of the rejections were for mentioning Common Core standards --- Are FL standards not up to national ones???
FL Board of Education: Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students
QuoteToday, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran approved Florida’s initial adoption list for mathematics instructional materials properly aligned to Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. The approved list followed a thorough review of submissions at the Department, which found 41 percent of the submitted textbooks were impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics – the most in Florida’s history.
Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics. The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies. Despite rejecting 41 percent of materials submitted, every core mathematics course and grade is covered with at least one textbook.

It looks like FL's "BEST" standards is what replaced Common Core, which was a failure.
Rejecting math books for going into CRT seems reasonable. Especially for younger grades. Why would a math book need to go into that, anyway?
Every course is covered by at least one book.
I'm not sure what you find to be "highly inflammatory"?
The statement about math books was ""Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics."
I don't know much about SEL and how it's used in mathematics but the definition I see online doesn't seem all that inappropriate. Apparently recently Florida was making moves to include more SEL in classrooms. Guess DeSantis is going back on that?
"Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions "
I'm curious as to what the texts of the ones that were rejected for teaching CRT say, since I thought it was already established that CRT is not being taught here.

Me too.
Someone from the DeSantis camp did Tweet an example that had previously been posted from a book used elsewhere. Some question whether it was really CRT, which I get.
I could see how the questions might lead to a discussion that includes CRT. Either way, the questions do seem odd for a math textbook. I don't see what they have to do to with a algebra problem.
