More than two dozen Senate Republicans demand Biden do more for Ukraine after voting against $13.6 billion for Ukraine

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/17/republicans-ukraine-aid-vote/

Maybe Hawley doesn't remember that he was cool with Trump literally holding Ukrainian military aid hostage for personal political favors just a few years ago and he also has been outspoken about the necessity of keeping Ukraine out of NATO.  Maybe he learned how to gas light conservatives at Harvard.

They had their reasons for not voting for the budget that included aid to Ukraine.

Romney said "Romney said that while he “strongly” supports providing aid to Ukrainians, he “ultimately could not support the rest of this bloated spending bill for the aforementioned reasons Forcing us to swallow the bad to get the good is concerning, unsustainable, and no way to govern over the long term,” he said.

It seems a reasonable stance and there is no need to spin them as hypocrites for calling for increased spending for Ukraine separate from an overall bill they didn't like.

Hawley seems a bit problematic in that in February he was opposed to the Ukraine being part of NATO .

Back in January some republicans were saying Biden cared more about the Ukrainian border than the American border.  " "This country has actual problems that our politicians should prioritize: election integrity, the border crisis, soaring inflation, violent crime, failing schools, and Big Tech, to name a few,"

Exactly why I was specific in dragging Hawley and not throwing a general blanket over the votes.

Getting Alaska back might be easier than some (mostly conservatives and independents) would think.

"A majority of Republicans and independents would stay and fight were Russia to invade the United States while a majority of Democrats say they would flee, according to a new Quinnipiac poll."

https://www.mediaite.com/politics/majority-of-democrats-polled-say-they-would-flee-not-stay-and-fight-if-russia-invaded-us/

It was no doubt an interesting poll, clearly we need to remake Red Dawn, or at least make watching the re-run mandatory.

There would seem to be something I'm not getting about how people answer the question, because the poll also found that about a quarter of military households would also just cut-and-run if Russia invaded.

If Russia invades and your plan is to just immediately flee America then just leave now, what are you waiting for?

I do wonder though how many of those in the Republican / Independent categories wouldn't leave mainly because they would rather be under Russian control than a Democrat.

Either way it's disappointing to see how cowardly we have become as a country.

China, which is facing its worst Covid-19 surge since the coronavirus first emerged in the city of Wuhan, on Saturday reported its first deaths from the virus in more than a year.

The two deaths were in the northeastern province of Jilin, according to China’s national health commission. This week, Jilin banned its 24 million residents from leaving the province or traveling between cities because of the surging case numbers there.

It's interesting to note the difference between China and the United States.  Weeks ago we were having a million infections a day and we were like "ho hum, it is what it is".  China with 2,157 is reporting a surge and instituting lockdowns.  The same day, with one third the population the US reported 36, 373 and it's not even on the news.  Our governor here in Florida said the other day "We have no tolerance for COVID theater in Florida." talking about masks which we hardly wear anyway.  But nothing about the "covid theater" that was a high death rate, hospitals struggling, and businesses hurting because of sick employees.  I don't support lockdowns or vaccine mandates at this point but he needs to shut up.

"Why should Americans have to pay the costs for freedom elsewhere when our own leaders won't stand up for our freedom here?" Gaetz said during the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Fla.

I suppose he's talking about the freedom of guns, religion or having a fair election that Trump won?

"All we’re hearing is potential war with Russia over Ukraine," she said on the House floor. "Ukraine is not a NATO member ally and President Biden had told them we would only be standing with our NATO member allies."

MJG said the above.  I don't listen to the House floor that much so perhaps it must be private conversations because publicly it's been said many times loud and clear that the US and NATO are not going to war with Russia.

Her point below might actually be a fair assessment, but no one wants to stand by and do nothing and let Russia get away with waging war.   I think it's pretty much understood that Ukraine is going to have to make some great concessions to Russia or be overrun.

“If we truly care about suffering and death on our television screens, we cannot fund more of it by sending money and weaponry to Ukraine to fight a war they cannot possibly win," she said. "The only effect, more arms and more money from America will be to prolong the war and magnify human suffering."

Which of those 8 republican house members ISN'T a clown? MTG specifically is a toxic and stupid specimen.  She's too stupid to even look simple things up before she goes on record saying incredibly stupid things about simple things...like other vaccines don't need multiple doses or that Pelosi runs a gespacho police force. Some iof her constituents think they need more like her!

The Senators, however, are a bit a different matter. We have members of the Senate that aren't that attached to our republic, as evidenced by 010621, and that is a very dangerous situation.  Senator John Kennedy (LA) joined Hawley and Cotton in voting against the Ukrainian aid. I remember that Kennedy spent July 4 in Moscow a few years back...presumably to talk to Putin about Russian interference in American elections...but even though he didn't meet Putin they had a nice time and that trip made a big difference in his these folks talk about and think about Russia, apparently.  Senator Ron Johnson (WI) is a perfect example of a Republican politician that seems to have been encouraged to spread and spout Russian propaganda. The fellow seems incapable of discerning Russian misinformation from reality since his return from Moscow.  But, yeah...they had other, "good reasons" to vote against the aid.

No, I don't think that MTG made a good point about not going to war. MTG is a barely thinking propagandist with deep character flaws which should have disqualified her from public service.  It seems that republican voters are looking for disqualified candidates for high public office because it upsets liberals to have idiots, fools and dangerous people in positions of authority. The republican voters give her money for saying and doing stupid and destructive things.

Exactly. The fellow was even an overtly rude bully to teenagers lined up to meet and support his policy...because they were wearing masks.  Some of those publicly reprimanded students removed their masks while others refused.  DeSantis lost voters that day.

Alaska representative Don Young died while Alaska slept.  That's the end of a very long career in the House of Representatives.  Don was born in California but despite that, Alaska republican voters loved him.  He lived for a spell in the off road village of Fort Yukon where he began his political career by serving as mayor.

There will be a special election to replace Young but it isn't yet clear if the new ranked voting that the public approved in the last election will be used.

Nearly 10 million have fled; Russian forces are in Mariupol, hindering rescues

As the death toll rose, the United Nations said Friday that about 9.8 million of Ukraine’s 44 million people have fled or been internally displaced. Ten humanitarian corridors were opened Saturday to help civilians flee, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian forces of committing war crimes by blocking deliveries of critical aid to people remaining in embattled cities. He called for “meaningful negotiations” with Moscow.
“It is time to restore territorial integrity and justice for Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote. “Otherwise, Russia’s losses will be so huge that several generations will not be enough to rebound.”

I wonder if Trump still thinks that Putin is smart or if Cawthorn still thinks Zelensky is a thug.

I don't think he lost voters.  He will easily slide into re-election.  It's predicted his margin will be greater than it was last election.

I definitely think his bad mood towards the students was uncalled for.  He said his agitation was the theatrics of it all because he was speaking to a bunch of maskless adults while the kids on stage were forced to wear a mask.  He's very much against kids wearing "muzzles" as he has called them.  I think it's a lame campaign but he will continue to ride on the idea that he kept Florida the "most free state in the nation" around covid.  People, despite our high number of infections and deaths, love him for that.  So no, he didn't lose voters that day.

I have said more than once, I rather enjoyed exiting lockdown early and never going back.  I rather enjoy not having to prove I'm vaccinated anywhere I go.  I rather enjoy having the choice whether to wear a mask most places I go, but places that require them like my job, I don't care.   I'm not stupid and got vaccinated and somehow despite DeSantis I never got covid.  Others weren't so lucky.  But it's certainly not enough to make me vote for him.

DeSantis is getting a lot of credit for the booming economy here, although inflation is some of the highest in the nation.
