What should you review over the summer going into a nursing program?

Published

I just got accepted into the fall semester of an ADN program. It has also been a semester or two since I had A&P I & II. I just wanted to know what are the main topics I should brush up on going into the program.

NOTHING, enjoy your freedom while you still have it! They will ease you into the program so don't worry about starting out behind, study what they tell you to and study often after you get in!

Nothing! Enjoy the summer, once u begin the program it gets busy. From my experience the first semester doesn't touch basis with the science prerequisites but more of your psychology and sociology courses. But don't study a thing just take it as it comes , one thing you will however need to know very fast once u begin is medical math aka (dosage calculations)..brush up on your basic math skills and u will b fine

You actually sound like me, and OP's it's hard to tell a Type A personality to relax! If you are looking to start brushing up on stuff get an A&P book or something, buy a NCLEX book and start reading it. These are the things I did before school started and on my breaks from school. I was always ahead of the game, I passed the NCLEX in 75 questions, I feel because I always had my face in the books, lol. I even had books by the toilet, I was relentless. Now this might not work for everyone or be advice by everyone else, but different strokes for different folks. I can't blame you for wanting to be a bit prepared. You could also write an email to your professor(s) asking what the curriculum will be so that you can start your reading. I did this and it helped a lot. Nursing school will be very busy for you, so please do enjoy some of your summer, don't forget to take care of you first and foremost. Good luck :)

I agree with the others! Enjoy your summer...

I got accepted for the fall too! I have been brushing up on math for allied health and some a&p. I'm so nervous!

Enjoying the summer is a great recommendation, but I also remember the excitement of getting ready to start, so reviewing some material at a casual rate may actually help you enjoy summer. Brushing up on normal anatomy isn't a bad idea, focus on major systems and how they work. Also reading a fundamentals book to get a handle on medical terms isn't bad either.

Good luck!

NOW is the best time to get an NCLEX book (preferably a 2012 version) and reviewing the med surg portion of it. you may not know the answers, but getting acclimated to the questions and how they are answered is a good bet. plus, you will learn about things in the process. They are changing the NCLEX format to also having "select all that apply" so getting familiar with those concepts as well is a benefit for you.

also, brush up on your math, > look online for "nursing math" and study metrics, dosage calculations and general math. King Henry does BAKE delicious corn muffins. Make sure you know the conversions within that and where to move the decimal.

see if you can get your hands on the book list and buy some books, get reading! > fundamentals, dosage calculations, lab books or Med surg. see if there are FB groups you can join that have groups that are in your nursing school. Dont waste these next two months doing NOTHING as everyone else said. :nono: NOW is the time to get ahead and be prepared.

I would relax as much as possible, but brushing up on A&P is not a bad idea and getting the NCLEX book ( I got the Saunders one ) are both going to help you. The type of questions that are asked in nursing school are very different from other classes because they require a good deal of critical thinking, not rote memorization. Also, in math, get familiar with dimensional analysis and make sure you know the metric system. It will help you with drug calculations! I also bought the Fundamentals Textbooks and have been perusing it. Not going in depth, but more like skimming to get familiar and then highlighting what pops out at me as being important. I am planning on getting all the textbooks soon, I just didn't see a point in driving all the way to school when I have a class that starts tomorrow (A&P2). Any time spent with the material is going to help you.

Don't spend so much time with it that you miss out on having a break. Summer is to be enjoyed as well! Good Luck!!!!

I got moved up on our waitlist to start this fall. A year early! Just found out last week. I am thinking the same thing, I want to brush up on A&P, because its been a while. Maybe some NCLEX stuff. Good luck to all of you who start this fall!

You should brush up on sleep, cleaning your house or room, spending time with family and friends, and relaxing. School will be here before you know it and it is so busy, just take the time to enjoy your freedom. Theres really no point in reviewing anything aside from some good magazines or nice fictional books :) Good Luck!
