Just a little informal poll here.... I took my med-surg HESI this week and did ok. I scored lower than I anticipated but I'll have an A in the class and that makes me super happy.
Anyway, I was looking through the review materials and references and the book my program uses was never mentioned. There were two that were repeatedly referenced and it made me wonder if the students that used those other two books scored higher on the HESI / NCLEX.
Do any of y'all use the Linton med-surg book? I bought study guide book with the Evolve logo on it but when I got it opened it is a companion book and has no answers in it. It seems like a good study guide but is useless to me if I can't verify the answers to anything.

We use the Ignatavicius med/surg book. I'm sure I totally spelled it wrong. We all call it Iggy for short. It's the one Saunders nclex review book references a lot.
That is the main one the HESI referenced. I'm considering trying to find a used, older edition copy on half.com or somewhere just for reference.

Lemone but my program is changing the book next year.
That was our required book too. To say that we "used" it would be a bit of a stretch. I have not looked at any other med-surg book but I found the Lamone book to be disorganized and frustrating to read and would often contradict itself in some chapters. At least it appear to anyway.
For those that don't mind sharing, would you be willing to share if you got the benchmark score and what book your program uses?

Iggy is ok. Long and drawn out and soooo boring but I've gotten all A's so far. We use ATI not hesi and I've gotten level 3 on all 3 proctored exams. I recommend Saunders nclex review book. I think its good and its an excellent review and summary of iggy. Save your money. Plus it comes with a cd with even more review questions.

My program uses Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Eleventh Edition, though as is often the case for venerable textbooks, the authors listed in the title are no longer involved with the book (instead it's written/edited by Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle, and Cheever). With such a high edition number, one presumes the original authors have since moved on to more interesting pastimes, such as pushing up daisies.
My program also uses the ATI instead of the HESI, and the ATI review book cites a different med-surg text than ours, which made studying for the Med-Surg ATI a fun time. /sarcasm

My program uses this book. It's a really, really good book, although sometimes it can go in to a little too much detail.

yeah I am a little confused, my instructor said we are using this one for the first course and the new edition for the second class.
So I figured I would just buy the new edition. Well the only thing I could find on the website that publishes the book that they consider the 8th edition is this,
Amazon.com: Medical-Surgical Nursing: Clinical Management for Positive Outcomes, 8th Edition (9781416036418): Joyce M. Black PhD RN CPSN CWCN FAPWCA, Jane Hokanson Hawks DNSc RN BC: Books
So I went ahead and ordered this. Our instructor is very unique in how he teaches and he goes off the lectures for our exams, the books are just used for further elaboration if we need it. So I figured even if it is a different book, it will have the same core information and will be ok.
At least that is what I tell myself LOL
I ordered a Kaplan review book to that is dated for 2010-2011 to adapt to the new NCLEX testing they are doing. SO I am hoping I am good. I know my close group of friends will probably use each edition so I can compare with their books to if I need to. But looking at the book info from the publishers site, this new ones looks better.

My school used Iggy for the last few years, but switched to Lewis for my class. I like it very much; it's well organized, easy to understand, good sized font and not terribly repetitive. It comes as either a single volume or a two volume, which is the one I have. There's also a pocket sized companion as well as software available in case you don't want to lug the full size to clinicals.
