11/14 What I Learned this Wk: Not everyone learns the same way/sleep is precious

Published

To not take for granted my role as a preceptor. But sometimes it can be just as tiring as if I was running my tail off for the entire shift. The mentee that I have had for the past 3 months has spoiled me because she is very sharp and catches on quickly. The one I had yesterday who has been in the program for the same length of time, is not up to par.

I need to recognize that not everyone learns in the same manner, so I must adjust my preceptorship techniques. The benefit of this young lady is her eagerness to learn and her receptiveness of constructive criticism.

I have also learned that I am one of those who have the string of DNA which predisposes me to a higher perception of sulfur compounds. In other words, I can smell the odor of asparagus in urine quicker than most.

In addition to these findings I learn how precious sleep is and how much I missed it. This is the first week in three months I have not had clinical. On Tuesday I slept until 3 p.m. But school work was not over, and I still have had a few late nights. Next week I'm going to spend quality time with my family.

Opening a new box of books for the next quarter is exciting as if it were Christmas. My midwifery and women's health texts have arrived and I'm excited to face the next chapter in my education

I invite everyone to share what they have learned this week and please remember to keep it nursing related.

I learned that when my coworker who graduated at the same time as me (a little over a year ago) comes to me looking for some motherly advice because she's scared to take on her newly assigned duties as charge nurse, I turn into a snarky wench, the likes of which I haven't seen since middle school.

I "learn" almost every month that I don't have to figure out if I love med-surg. It's okay to just be okay with where I am, soak up as much knowledge as I can, and wait to see where life takes me.

Specializes in Psych, Corrections, Med-Surg, Ambulatory.
I learned that while it's not a deal breaker yet, being in the rifle sight of the office snitch is going to eventually make me very cranky, especially since she's not clinical to begin with.

When I first started this job, she told me "You know, I bet I could go take boards right now and get an RN license, I've been around it for so long." Yeah...no. Better yet, when I mentioned it to my Supervisor, she chuckled and said "Yes, I can imagine her saying that". [emoji33]

She's Psych/Soc (apparently a SW at some point) who crawled from minion to management on the broken and bloody bodies of former co-workers. And feels that she is perfectly competent to critique what the nurses do, don't do, how fast they say "How high?" when she says "Jump!"

Don't mind me, I'm just a COB with some indignation I have to unload somewhere. [emoji35]

Don't get me started on that ilk.

This week I have learned:

*I would much rather want to know when something contagious is in my kids class like FLU or strep, etc. than lice. I have to send home three handouts saying "Lice has been found in your child's classroom" (I know the CDC, NASN, and AAP discourage sending home for lice but its our policy :banghead: ), but we cannot utter a word that the flu has started.

*I think I have finally talked my mother-in-law (who watches my kiddos) into a flu shot. She feeds the homeless every Friday-and not just "Here's your food have a nice day" feeds them-she goes into their camps and chats for a few hours, so I've been hounding her to get one and I think she caved.

*I can't for the life of me figure out why parents want to leave their sick 4 year old at school. The kid was crying from his throat hurting so bad, and had a temp even though they gave him Tylenol before school, but "I guess I will have to leave work and come get him if you wont let him stay there." Okay then :)

*Trying to make my family understand why I started my 19 month old in Speech Therapy is like talking to a wall, he is delayed but "You should just give him more time". No, thank you.

*No matter how hard I try, Eli Manning will not listen when I tell him that the reason November is statistically his worst month, is because he isn't clean shaven. Sexy, but not clean shaven. Shave and you'll win...promise.

*I speak another language in my dreams, I wish I could remember the exact words I said that way I could look-up if I am actually saying anything or just babbling.

I learned that waking up to the SWAT team on campus and being told to shelter in place is slightly alarming... You never think it can happen to you, but here we are making national news.

Stay safe. Lots of crazy **** happening these days.

I've learned I'm really tired of mesmerizing and regurgitating information.

I've learned I am mesmerized by Ood.

Specializes in Neuro ICU and Med Surg.

I have learned my fractured wrist hurts much more than when I fractured my fibula and walked on it for 5 days.

My instructors gave me a 3 day extension on my pharm paper. That is great. I wasn't expecting one. I didn't ask, just emailed them letting them know it might be late.

My new boss seems pretty cool in the few times I have talked to her since she took over our team in October.

Specializes in Renal, Diabetic.
Guess where Ood is?!

I was just there this weekend too!

I've learned that reconstituting 10 Rocephin = skip arm day at the gym :)
