What I learned this week (7/11/15)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

This week, I learned......

1. When a person is anuric, a fentanyl drip may not be the most appropriate option for them.

2. Patients seriously get spoiled in ICU. Boy do they get disappointed when they go out today the floor with 4:1 and higher ratios.

3. "Fever of unknown origin" is not the best possible admission diagnosis for your first ever needle stick.

4. If you're going to give a non-responsive patient a t**** twister to attempt to make them responsive, you should really warn the other people in the room first.

5. I am seriously getting tired of getting off work hours after my shift was supposed to end.

6. My family is out of town this weekend, and I have been working, so clearly, my dog has decided she is dying.

7. So.....apparently 11:30 on a Saturday night is the best time to take the family out to shop at Walmart.

8. If a nurse calls you for narcan, just say yes.

9. It sort of feels amazing to have a respected colleague say you'd be perfect for ICU. At least, I hope it was a compliment. That's a compliment, right?

10. It's crushing to see a person who did everything right in life slowly lose every piece of themselves to random illnesses that hit and leave damage.

11. Wegener's Granulomatosis is evil.

12. My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.

Man I had a whole list of good stuff a couple of days ago and now I am drawing a blank. I'll have to comment bomb as I remember.

What did you learn this week?

What I have learned this week is that, to me, being a SAHM is more difficult for ME than nursing. Nursing is hard & grueling, yes; but trying to read the mind of my 1 year old as he throws a tantrum is something that makes me want to pull my hair out.

I love my son to death but I can't wait to get my RN license & start working again. Because he & my husband drive me up the walls!

Don't rush through this time, says the old bat mom whose kid is leaving for college in a month.

1. It is difficult to focus on the positive aspects of my job.

2. Sometimes, if you are lucky, Holier-than-Thou coworkers get knocked off the High Horse by their own actions.

3. It still brightens my day when a patient thanks me and means it.

Awwww! I don't want anything to fly by, I already wish I could slow time. I didn't believe anyone who told me that time would go by before my eyes. My son is already 13 months! But I do miss working & am ready to start nursing school.

I learned that when the new hospital across town is offering a significantly more money, there is a mass exodus of staff.

I totally feel you. I love my girls, but some Fridays I pick them up from daycare and by noon on Saturday I'm asking if it's time to take them back yet!

But time goes by waaaaay to quickly. By the time I graduate nursing school my oldest will be finishing Kindergarten. And my 20 month old has just gone from mamma, dadda and uh - uh to "mom" "dad" and a very clear "no".

I learned this week, upon stepping into Walmart and seeing the back to school aisles already starting that I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be starting nursing school in 7 weeks.

I also learned that by making the effort to buy super washable markers (because said 20 month on loves to draw on herself - with pens and markers) you will find her entire leg, foot, belly, and somehow her butt, covered in a psychedelic rainbow.

I learned that I have forgotten how much fun potty training is.

Washable markers. My boys were about 18 months and 3 years, little, and we were down the basement coloring. I snuck upstairs to do some housework, got caught up, and realized they had been unusually quiet. I crept downstairs to see my younger son covered in purple squiggly lines on his arms and legs. My older son looks up and says, "Look, Mommy! VEINS!"

I learned THAT week that I was grateful for washable markers.

Specializes in Hospice.

That Tylenol is ALWaYS accompanied with tramadol. I learned this from my 85 y/o patient in a very unpleasant manner. I also learned that I cannot educate everyone because they know everything and that I am just a stupid nurse.

The most important thing I learned....I needed 2 weeks vacation instead of 1.

I learned that I missed my nurse buddies!

Also that San Francisco is amazing and beach sand can and will get inside your suit into private areas

I learned that you could push Kayexelate through a foley catheter into someone's rectum during CPR.

That working 3; off 2; working 3; off 2; working 3; off 2... freakin' sucks. I am eagerly anticipating my 8 day stretch off-- in 2 more weeks.
