What do you guys like to do in your free time?

Im not a nurse, but im considering it.(18 years old)

I know that in nursing school you only have time for studying because of the intense work load. But how does that change once you have a job?

I personally have a passion for drawing, and after not drawing for about 2 years, im slowly getting back into it and realizing how much I love it. A small percentage of me would want to go to art school, but it doesn't seem to offer much stability. I definitely want to have enough time to draw, perhaps do freelance work, take art classes, etc and basically still enjoy life. I wouldn't want my life to revolve around nursing, and i'd be broken hearted if I couldnt do art as much as I'd like to.

So...what do you guys like to do outside of work? How do you manage a work/personal life balance?

I just came back from eight weeks as a camp nurse. This camp has about two thousand campers/staff at a time. I worked about 30-50 hours per week besides nights that I was on-call. In my spare time I made a tea and coffee set out of pottery with service for two. I made a number of really cool glass necklaces, bracelets and wall plaques. I also choreographed dances for one of the camper performances and did hair, makeup and costumes for the other.

While I'm at home, I do youth programming in a synagogue, I write both creative and professional pieces for publication, do volunteer respite for kids with terminal illness, and work on my pet project: suicide prevention training for everyone.

I'm not a genius (no, really!) and it was hard but I didn't bust my butt over it.

Good for you! Thinking the angst acquired during nursing school is individual. I over thought, as usual.

Overthinking came in handy in the real world, sometimes.

I have a five year-old, so we hang out. I like to hit up Crossfit, and just get outdoors. Since I spend so much time inside while working, I find it helps me recharge to get outside for horseback riding, running, whatever.

I have a hard time balancing work and play, and I have to remember to work less and take more PTO. Like make a conscious effort to do it, because I tend to over-estimate my abilities to cope without rest or play.

Hi,

I enjoy road and mountain biking, riding my motorcycle (although as I get older I get more and more nervous doing that), target shooting (nothing like shooting a 12 G for stress relief, and yes I am a woman!), hiking, and I am hoping to start kayaking soon! I HATE sitting around the house so as you can see my hobbies all involved getting out of the house!

Also go on a 2-3 cruises a year, although it has been one a year for the last couple of years while a get through my RN-BSN (2 more classes in the fall!)

Many of my friends have recently started riding a motorcycle. I have trepidation about it, but they swear by it.

I really would like to start riding, but I don't trust the drivers in my area. I swear, how some people got their license is beyond me.

You know.. that world after the imaginary world of nursing school.:nailbiting:

During school, I had a child and a full-time job. I was pretty busy. I didn't study all that much. I always got my 8 hours or more of sleep per day. I saw friends and worked out.

Now that I'm done, well, I still have a child and a full-time job, but school is out of the way. I feel like I have an insane amount free time. I'm in a constant state of 'Am I forgetting to do something?' I've found that I really want to learn Spanish so I may invest some time into that.

Twice in my life I've owned a motorcycle - once pre-kids, and again a couple years ago. My husband LOVES his motorcycle - taking it out alone into the mountains, he calls it "cycle-therapy". I tried to start riding again to enjoy it with him, and I couldn't do it. I did not enjoy it at all. The exhilaration I felt was after we arrived at our destination, and I had survived without killing myself or crashing it. It was stressful and anxiety-inducing, so I sold it after about a year.
