This is a second career for me. I start an accelerated nursing program in January. Currently, I am most interested in psychiatric nursing, nursing research, education and public health. These are areas I have already been somewhat exposed to in varying degrees. I am hopeful, once in school, I will be exposed to other areas of nursing that I also find interesting. But either way, there are already quite a few areas for me to pursue.
I want to use my mind and my hands in my work. This will be my third "career". I made the decision to go to school to become a nurse when I was 29. I'm 32 now. I am a mom to 3 who range in age from 6 to 16.
I really love working with all sorts of people, so I would be willing to work in any area. But, I am really would like to become a nurse practitioner because they work more independently and can provide hands on care as well as make some decisions regarding patient care. I am also very interested in working with the elderly. I've desired to help them for many years. I would love to be able to help new moms and could see myself helping breastfeeding or giving the parents of pediatric patients help.
This is a second career for me and Im trying to go into it with an open mind that way I can give my all to each experience and go with what my instincts tell me then. The whole nursing thing is brand new to me but I work with skin right now (esthetician) and Im considering tying in my esthetics experience with nursing and work in dermatology. But I have also gotten the chance to work a lot with children who have cancer and they just stick with me after each time Im with them...Its heartbreaking but there is nothing that feels as good as putting a smile on their face and letting them be kids. So maybe something in that?

I always wondered what fields of nursing most pre-nursing students were interested in. Most of the time, I hear ER or CRNA because they make the most money. Personally, I am more interested in the N.I.C.U and labor and delivery. What area of nursing are you interested in and why?
