Hey everyone! I'm starting as a school nurse for a middle school and high school next Monday. I am the only nurse in the district. I was told the previous nurse (position has been vacant for a year) would wear scrubs sometimes and sometimes business casual, more like a teacher. Both are acceptable, apparently.

What does everyone wear? I don't have set guidelines. Help!

Not allowed to wear scrubs.  This is the status quo of most school nurses in my region. Business casual, I gear towards nice-casual ...

I'd use whatever you have in your closet already ?

FTR - not SN here and am long retired. But I hate scrubs.  Reminds me of prison garb - once saw OJ Simpson on TV walking into court, and he was wearing his navy scrubs, but his handcuffs gave him away!!

Good for you DeadSea.

We are allowed to wear whatever we want. I do wear scrubs most of the time as it makes me easily identifiable as the nurse, they look professional, it's easy to get dressed in the morning, I can wear tennis shoes which are comfortable, easy to clean and there's lots of pockets to hold my stuff. I do sometimes wear jeans and a school hoodie on fridays or when it's super cold out but then I miss all my pockets all day long.

LOL - I totally agree!  It doesn't stop me from wearing them.  My favorite color is orange and I saw the cutest scrubs in a catalog - looked burnt orange, like they'd be adorable for fall.  When they came in, it was a big NOPE  -Prison orange....  I wore them a few times, but when my boss made me a construction paper ankle monitor as a goof, I decided I'd let those go.

Had a recent dream where I was returning to floor nsg. I had to go shopping to buy 'whites' bc I couldn't find my old ones. I was looking for my 'clinics' and 'nursemates' and my CAPS.

Been having 'return to clinical' dreams recently - even after I retired, I RARELY dreamed of working (except for my being lost & looking for the exit).

Dresses and heels and a lab coat. (I think I’ll skip the dresses and heels part though)

Disclaimer: I'm seldom on any of these sites and I am not now, nor have I ever been a school nurse.

But I couldn't resist adding here, as a kind of off-the-wall answer, a reference to a song probably many of you are too young to remember, but it does have to do with clothes. The funny thing about this song is that it was written in the 1950's (I think), so the clothes mentioned were considered a lot weirder then than they would in this day and age...

"Tan shoes with pink shoelaces, a polka-dot tie and man-oh-man, tan shoes with pink shoe laces and a big panama with a purple hat-band."

OK, that's all, folks! I will return this site back to the usual posters!

When I first started subbing, I wore what all the school nurses I encountered were wearing - business casual; But in the high school settings, I would often get mistaken for a preppy teenager (I took that as a compliment). When I did shifts at the boarding school, this became a literal problem, as some of the students wouldn't believe that I was actually a nurse (despite the name tag with my credentials) and would leave the health center on my watch without my permission and generally not follow the health center rules under my care. My supervisor basically told me I looked too young and was being mistaken for a student volunteer and so she politely suggested I wear scrubs. I have been ever since, and have not had trouble since... I have since held inpatient and office roles where scrubs were the only option, though a stint in an outpatient behavioral health practice had me wearing pencil skirts and cardigans on the regular - a drastic departure! Now I'm FT in the school and scrubs are by far the easiest thing to wear on the daily, though most other staff and even some of the other nurses in the district wear business casual or jeans and t-shirts. I usually "dress down" on Fridays - jeans and a sweatshirt. With scrubs, everyone automatically knows who I am. 8 years on, I am sure I would never again be mistaken for a student, but with the variety of scrub styles available now, I actually prefer it. I spend waaay less on clothes, never have to worry about getting bodily fluids on them, and still get to feel cute!

I have been really into the brand Figs recently - I know they are more expensive and have had some missteps with their advertising campaigns, but they are pretty size inclusive and have a lot of styles. They are wrinkle resistant, too, which is a major plus for those of us who have a hard time getting clothes out of the dryer right when it finishes haha

I wear "business casual" which I translate to mean leggings or jeans and a sweater, or t shirt, or school t shirt or sweatshirt. Very comfy clothes. I'm in K-6 with 440 students.
