What do your coworkers do to annoy you?

Nurses General Nursing

Last night when I got report from the RN who was leaving, he told me the doc had ordered a stat med for one of my patients. After report, I checked the chart, and found the order timed for a half hour before the start of my shift. I bit my tongue, gave the med, and when I discarded the syringe, found the sharps container overflowing. This was just too much, so I caught the other nurse just as he was leaving, and gave him an earful about the sharps container. He responded that the aides are supposed to replace the containers. This was the final straw. Not only had he not given a stat med ordered on his shift, he had put me at risk for a needle stick, then used the "It's not my job" excuse. I let him have it with both barrels. After he left, I checked on my other patient, a GI bleed who was having frequent bloody stools. She wanted to be helped off the bed pan, but I had to make her wait while I went for gloves, because the box in the room was empty. :( :(

I was venting to some of the others on my shift, and we came up with a list of co workers' annoying habits.

Not emptying an overflowing garbage can.

Leaving packaging from meds all over the counter in the med room.

Starting the GoLytely prep an hour before the end of their shift.

Leaving the bags from discontinued IV meds hanging at the bedside.

Leaving a patient in a dirty gown after he has spilled food on himself.

Not giving pain meds on time.

Leaving a patient's room a mess.

Not making sure there are adequate supplies in the room so you don't have to run for everything you need.

Not doing mouth care.

Always coming 5 or 10 minutes late and delaying report while they pour coffee and "get organized."

Giggling and whispering in report.

Not answering call bells for any patient but their own.

I'm sure I could come up with many more if I thought about it some more.

Not being good team players...not agreeing to help one another out when help is needed...always wanting my help, but never wanting to help me in return...gossiping about patients or staff...being in PMS mode 24/7.

WOW!

Amazing that I was going to start a thread to vent just on this subject.

There is one chick at work in her 30's and she doesn't have her act together at all. When she is listening to report, she is always three thoughts behind and you continually have to repeat yourself. She is very high strung. She is the equivelent of my poodle, only much worse. Everything is a drama. I cringe when I follow her or she follows me.

I hate high strung people more than anything else.

I hate when the nurses say that they are going to let the transfer sit downstairs with an hour and half plus left to the shift.

I hate not nice nurses-particularly ones that don't handle their hot flashes and mood swings well.

I hate that pharmacy is lazy and won't call in meds ordered because I can handle it, "Its only three meds". GRR.

Oops, I have to put a lid on the venting.

hate the habit of one particualar nurse with whom i work..nice person but not good coworker..spends most of her day b!tch!ing about how much much work she has..when if she dedicated half that time to actually doing said work..she'd not be so behind...procrastinates, then moves visits to the next day (we do home care)...expects evryone else to pick up her slack i literally do between 3-5x the number of visits that she does...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! gotta go pour a glass of wine and chill out..sorry!!! :( :( :angryfire

I get annoyed when I come in to work and the nurse I'm relieving is sitting there with a magazine waiting on me (I'm chronically 10 mins early just in case it's hell) and then while getting report I hear of all the things he/she DIDN'T do!

"So and so needs a U/A and there are these orders to be noted" And I see the trash cans full and the empty pizza boxes in the corner and the floor is a MESS!

I finally refused the keys until she finished up her work.

Sometimes, if they're still breathing, then that's enough to really p*ss me off :D

Can you tell I had a bad day?

I had one co-worker who was really getting on everyone's nerves one day. The nursing supervisor (who really gets along with this lady well) joked to her that she needed some premeren. This co-worker laughed at this...she apologized for getting on everyones nerves. Then ensued a joke fest on "Arial spraying" of premeren. One said "sprinkling". My answer was "Sorry, but I'm Southern Baptist...we don't sprinkle, we dunk". That got the bigest laugh. We could usually joke each other out of bad moods, but there were some people from other shifts who could really bug me.

the thing that irritates me the most is the nurses in my facility that do not speak a lick of english. I was told in report that so and so had a blood sugar of 30. I asked her what she did about it... she smiled and said "I gave her her amaryl." Needless to say, I ran out of report started a line and pushed some dextrose for a while. The scary thing is, that nurse still works there.

Also the nurses that don't know the difference between Novolin N and Novolin R. Had a nurse (non english speaking again) give 40u of R by mistake. (at least that nurse got fired)

Well, my situation is a tad different, wsince I am doing home health now, but, what irks the living he!! out of me is when the nurse before me tells a pt I will be there between such and such a time. Excuse me? Did you check with me to see if I am not already promised to me in anothe t township at that time????? Ggggrrrrr. Happened again today. To make it worse, the weekend per diem who opened the case wrote up wound care orders, but never ordered the supplies, fortunately I had an extra duoderm in my bag, or the whole purpose of the visit, to change the duoderm and instruct the caregiver how to do so, would have been moot. A note on the front of the chart saying no supplies in home woud be helpful!!! I had another visit in the same building for after 2 :30, but this nurse arranged for the caregiver to be there between 10 and 12. I made it my 11:40, and that was with the pedal to the medal!

If you used the last supply, order a refill or replace it

Do NOT make my appt's for me or make promises to pt's that you cannot keep yourself, another nurse may not be able to keep your promises for you.

Sometimes having certain staff show up for work is enough to annoy me. ;) :chuckle
