What do your coworkers do to annoy you?

Nurses General Nursing

Last night when I got report from the RN who was leaving, he told me the doc had ordered a stat med for one of my patients. After report, I checked the chart, and found the order timed for a half hour before the start of my shift. I bit my tongue, gave the med, and when I discarded the syringe, found the sharps container overflowing. This was just too much, so I caught the other nurse just as he was leaving, and gave him an earful about the sharps container. He responded that the aides are supposed to replace the containers. This was the final straw. Not only had he not given a stat med ordered on his shift, he had put me at risk for a needle stick, then used the "It's not my job" excuse. I let him have it with both barrels. After he left, I checked on my other patient, a GI bleed who was having frequent bloody stools. She wanted to be helped off the bed pan, but I had to make her wait while I went for gloves, because the box in the room was empty. :( :(

I was venting to some of the others on my shift, and we came up with a list of co workers' annoying habits.

Not emptying an overflowing garbage can.

Leaving packaging from meds all over the counter in the med room.

Starting the GoLytely prep an hour before the end of their shift.

Leaving the bags from discontinued IV meds hanging at the bedside.

Leaving a patient in a dirty gown after he has spilled food on himself.

Not giving pain meds on time.

Leaving a patient's room a mess.

Not making sure there are adequate supplies in the room so you don't have to run for everything you need.

Not doing mouth care.

Always coming 5 or 10 minutes late and delaying report while they pour coffee and "get organized."

Giggling and whispering in report.

Not answering call bells for any patient but their own.

I'm sure I could come up with many more if I thought about it some more.

Well, what really gets me is when I got to work the other night and was told," I am so glad to see you, this kid has not quit screaming all night long, and I am sick of it." My sweet response" Babies CRY!!!" I didn't add----- Especially in the NICU, where we are just about torturing them sometimes and you won't even get off your lazy buns to give him a pacifier or attempt repositioning him or change his diaper." AAAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! If you don't want to EVER hear a baby cry don't work NICU or newborn nursery!!!

Not restocking is my biggest pet peeve that is non-patient care related.

Or telling me "If you see that I forgot to chart something can you call me- I've got something really important to do (a party) and can't stay any longer." This at 15 minutes prior to the end of scheduled shift! Sure, I'm going to know that you didn't chart something from 10:00A at midnight--- but I'll be questioning whether you did it or not."

Most people I do not mind cleaning up after because I know that they work and don't normally leave stuff, but the above are the ones that just really get to me.

I have one co-worker who works the 10p-6a shift after me and i'm her releif when she's off so I know her shift too, when she comes in,instead of listening to my report she is constantly interrupting me, telling me how hard her shift is and how hard she works. IT'S A NURSING HOME!!!!! Almost everyone is asleep until it's time to do the fasting accuchecks!!!!! You have about 1.5 hrs of paperwork to do then the rest is find-it work to do.

Specializes in ENT, UROLOGY, PLASTIC/BURN.

what I can not stand is martyrs. Ask for help.............just because someone doesnt offer doesnt mean that they dont want to.

well... it's a good thing that i am very tolerent of the things that most people consider annoying...however... a coworker of mine (and also a dear friend) must always mention at least 20 times a day that he has worked critical care. even though we (his coworkers) come from other backgrounds in nursing and appreciate his expertise greatly, it does get annoying after a while. annoying to me especially when he refuses to hear other people's opinions and thinks he knows everything. i believe that there is always something that one person may know that another does not know! a good foundation of nursing care can begin with the information that nurses can share--2 heads are better than one. thanks for the rant!

"know-it-alls suck!"

Specializes in Med onc, med, surg, now in ICU!.

1. Stand at the nurses' desk, or wherever they stop, and YELL for other nurses. There's nothing like hearing your name screamed down the hall at 3am - and guess which name the patients are cursing when they are woken up?

2. Running around the joint, stopping to tell everyone how busy they are. If you have time to tell me you're busy, you have time to get one of your jobs done and reduce your workload!

3. I don't think this one will go down well, but - I hate it when my opinion or clinical judgement is discounted just because I am a 'new grad'. I will be finished my first year in a matter of days and will no longer be called a new grad - I can't wait! Also, please don't look so shocked when I know something about so-called renal dose dopamine, or the half-life of propofol, or, well, anything. I am a new grad, but I am not an idiot.

4. Drama queens. Sometimes, it's really not a big deal at all, and we don't all need to hear about it one at a time, over and over. If you have to tell the story, tell it once and leave it at that.
