What would you change about your scrubs?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

Hey all~

I am doing research for a line of scrubs and would like to find out what nurses like/ dislike about their uniforms.

I am a fashion design student that recently spent some time in the hospital for cancer treatment this summer. I was so inspired by the compassion and care shown by the nurses and would like to thank you guys by providing uniform options that are comfy, stylish and help the wearer feel more 'individualized'.

What elements (pockets, elastic waistbands, tagless uniforms, etc) do you look for in a pair of scrubs?

What would you change about scrubs if you had the chance? (here's your chance)

What are the most popular colors worn by nurses? What colors/ prints do you dislike?

What instruments/ items do you carry on your person when you work? (pen, paper, hidden snack wink.gif )

What are the dress code restrictions at your place of work?

Thank you for any input. More importantly, thank you for always giving to those around you- giving your time, comforting words, upbeat vibes and patience. It means more than you know.

Heck, I'd wear a big apron if I could find one. THEY MAKE SENSE!

:thankya::thankya::thankya:

there ya go.

a nurse's apron that slips over the neck, ties in back (or wrap around to front), huge pockets...now you're talking.

and what about nurse's work boots? (i love work boots).

to heck with pumps and pearls.

i'm there to dig in and get dirty!

For the tops I like having at least two pockets, and I also like having pockets with the pants. I prefer elastic waistbands rather than drawstrings. I also like wearing the mock wraps.

please make a new line of xxs tops...hahaha...I'm petite and slim and the xsmall tops are still too wide for me... and yes, i don't like the cleavage-showing v-necks...and yes, deep pockets are desirable...

for colors and prints, I like my scrub jackets plain-colored and tops printed...I would love to see tops with dainty prints, and not those big, bold stars or hearts or flowers...

This is a great topic!

I like wide elastic waist pants. I'd love to see scrubs (and women's pants in general) in lengths measured in inches like men's pants. I'm a plus size, short, but with an average torso, so most petites are too short in the rise, giving me a wedgie, and regulars are built for someone 6 ft. tall. Pockets on the breast of the tops are really useless for women except as a place to attach your tag.

Really wrinkle resistant material would be a real plus as I HATE ironing!

Thanks for posting this!

I am male RN, there is a distinct lack of suitable and affordable mens scrubs.

I like tops with deep pockets, sturdy materials and MALE prints. I don't wear teddy bears, butterflies and hearts but I do like dogs, cars, motorcycles, wildlife, etc. I don't wear lime green, orange, bright yellow or other loud colors. I like earth tones, blues, forest green, other NATURAL colors! I want tops that are long enough to cover the dreaded "plumbers crack" when I bend over. I want tops with shoulder room.

I hate pants with ties, Give me elastic, wide waist bands and a darn zipper fly! Lots of deep sturdy pockets and no elastic cuffs. Tapered legs, with out so much extra material in the butt and hips.

I know QVC sells a new custom jean that you can pick color, cut, zip-fly, button fly, inseam, seat fit, waist fit and you just put in the measurements that work for you. I am 4'11" and not skinny. Alot of the "big girl" stores sell big stuff but just because your wide one direction doesn't mean your long the other. I can wear the underwear and double the duty as a tube top!!! The crotch in everything is always sooooo long. I'm sure they fit most but not everyone. Petite sections only go up to a certain size. No one makes a short and wide section. Even losing weight gave me few options due to being so short. I wish I could grow a few inches but being realistic I wish someone would just make custom fitted scrubs. That would satisfy everyone. You can add a pocket where ever you want a strap to whatever pocket to hold whatever item. You can pick the color and texture. That would be AWESOME. I'm sure that if the quality was really good the price wouldn't be problem at all.

Oh oh and one other thing. I don't know many women that wear scrubs that don't have the problem of the area where the thighs rub together

that doesn't wear out before everything else. It's horrible to wear out a pair of scrubs that still look great but only have the awful hole in you crotch. Thicker material there would be totally AWESOME!

:yeahthat:

I'm tired of patching that area, cuz it's never smooth, then I have material rubbing me.... I'm hitting the point of TMI. :uhoh21:

Inseams about 32" on UNtapered pants, with elastic waistband. And cargo pockets that aren't so far down the leg that they are by my knees... my arms aren't that long, and I don't look particularly graceful bending sideways to get the keys out, or my pager/phone to see what callbell is ringing.

And I may be in the minority here, but I liked the sewn-in centre crease on the pant leg. It just looked crisper, and I didn't have to iron them.

Scrub tops... less deep Vs, HUGE deep pockets, a comfortably deep side slit, real set-in sleeves, wrinkle free material, rich vibrant colours, dainty soft prints (although I LOVE the glow in the dark dancing cows from CrazyScrubs.com), breast pockets are useless for the woman who a sizeable chest, darts would be good.

More green/green prints would be lovely... I don't like blue, and a great majority of prints are blue background. I'd LOVE a sage green scrub that didn't look like OR green.

Tagless would be wonderful, but I often forget where I bought something, or the brand, and the size, so maybe have tags low on a sideseam.

I only carry around a pen, my worksheet, my phone/pager, and the medcart/narc keys. But during my med pass, my pockets become my third and fourth hands, holding aerochambers, puffers, eye gtts, patches, etc, as I run from cart to resident. They also function as a dressing cart sometimes. ;)

I hope to see some of our suggestions make it into real life!

Lots of posters posted great ideas. But one different one I could say is I would like my scrubs to be fitted for me, a woman. I would like the outfit to show my figure. I always tend to purchase the scrubs with the waist ties because it makes me look less dumpy and dowdy. Figure flattering is the key for me.

A little bit of what everyone said. Something stretchy, we move a lot. Something a little thicker with sturdy fabric and breathable. I like those Old Navy "khaki" and "old army green" cargo pants. Up here in Alaska we layer our top shirts, and some of the girls bought these nice pants that when you pour water on them it just runs off. Really great for snowy days.

I like Karen's idea of the darting on the tops. That really accentuates the positive...also the center crease on the pant leg is a great idea. Looking good at work helps you to feel great and it also enhances that air of professionalism.

LOTS of good ideas here, and we can see that what one person loves, another hates!

For me, well....I'm short enough that supposedly 'petite' lengths are still too long. Depressing to have to either hem them or let them drag a bit. I'm talking 26" inseam, folks: why is it not possible? The shortest petites I find now are 28" (and some companies think "petite" is 29"...LOL!).

I like elastic waists, BUT I really prefer the ones that aren't so danged tight they could cut off breathing: the kind of elastic waists that don't let your pants fall down, but let you keep your circulation! ;)

Why must a boot cut (or gentle flare) ONLY be associated with low-rise waists? I'd love to know the answer to that: I'd KILL to find a petite length pant, with boot cut or slight flare, a flattering fit, that doesn't have a waistband on my HIPBONES. :nono:

How about THIS: when buying "sets" of scrubs, matching solid tops and bottoms, basics, why can we never have the option of buying say a medium top and small bottoms? Or the reverse, whatever? I sometimes find a brand will have me in smalls in their tops, mediums in their bottoms, (or even vice versa) but I CANNOT get a 'set' since apparently I am not sized like their mannequin!

I like, but have a hard time finding, tops that are cut so that they aren't puddling around my middle and yet grabbing at my hips. No, I'm not a pear, LOL, but I *AM* usually carrying enough STUFF in my two patch pockets that they fit a bit snug there. And if I buy a size large enough to accomodate that STUFF, the rest of the top tends to be....frumpy. Finding something that allows me a feminine shape and still has a bit of extra "give" on the bottom near the pockets would be great.

OH! I think I've GOT it....if those very same tops had GUSSETTED pockets in the front, you know, instead of "patches".....the pockets could bulge out a bit and not cause the fabric to pull against my hips. I've never seen that. Maybe it looks ugly, LOL, but I bet it'd be comfortable AND a better fit.

Fabrics? How about something TASTEFUL for a change? I don't wear cartoon characters. I'm not a seven year old; I don't like the latest tv show on my top. I don't like gigantic patterns that no one would EVER wear on clothing outside of nursing. Ever. I'd like to find patterns that I'd be inclined to wear in the REAL world! People will know I'm their nurse because of my huge ID tag, the fact that I've introduced myself and have a scope slung around my neck. Why do I have to dress like bad artwork?

Thanks for asking!

I can wear the underwear and double the duty as a tube top!!!
