What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Trump said at border that the country is being over run with "Biden migrant crime and it's a new form of vicious violation to our country".

Fox News is quick to report any crime being committed by a migrant and to hear them it's a huge problem.  But does data support this fear mongering?

I don't care if the rate of crime is not any greater.  What is the total number of crimes being committed?  Those are all crimes that shouldn't have happened here.

You seem to be worried enough to frequently tell us how meaningless the polls are.

No, just pointing out facts.

What immigration laws did Trump pass?  You are confusing me with someone who agrees with open borders, even though I have never met that person.  I only support legal immigration.

Biden is not responsible for the reason that people are migrating to the US, it's the political and economical situation from the countries they are leaving.

However, we can't stick our head in the sand and not acknowledge that as soon as Biden won the election there was another surge because they perceived him to be more immigrant friendly and he said as much which encouraged them.

Trump had his surge but Biden had one too and Biden is having record numbers at the border.  While it might not be fair to burden him with the blame, it's his to deal with and it's a big deal with voters.

Democratic voters have their #1 issue being Democracy and that's mine as well.  But for Republicans, it's the  #1 issue and we've lost them.  But for independents and democrats it's becoming more and more of a concern.  Even Democrats admit that Trump would do a better job at the border than  Biden.  I think perhaps it might, but it would be through convincing the people to fear them with lies and dehumanizing them.

Yes, there was a surge.  I contend that making Biden the largest contributer to that surge is over simplifying what happened.

Biden became president during a global pandemic.  We know that Trump's policy required that tens of thousands of asylum seekers await the slow process in Mexico.  He weaponized the pandemic to achieve some border objectives. Those people presented to the border again after the pandemic emergency measures lifted.   Life in those camps is not great.  They'd much rather work and pay taxes in the USA.

That people in the world might perceive our leadership as benevolent and compassionate is good. IMV  That migration of people may well have become hopeful to hear so many messages that the US border was open starting in 2021. Surely coyotes used that marketing to take advantage of people.

Title 42 was pandemic/ emergency dependent, so it seems to me that it was incumbent upon our legislators to legislate a process to transition to a regular order and secure border process.  Modernized equipment and funding expectations seem reasonable.

As mentioned before, the rise of and celebration of authoritarians during Trump's tenure contributed to the number of people fleeing those areas for security and dignity.  As history shows us, extremists can cause harm much more quickly than harm can be mitigated or managed.

I get it.  Border and immigration theater is the GOPs best bet for a national policy stance that they can sell to the largest number of general election voters.  Not women's rights.  Not voting rights. Not affordable medications or a living wage or protection from unscrupulous capitalists, conmen and cheats. OK, maybe some privacy protection from conmen and cheats.

The media has a need to create a perception of balance in the interests and agendas of the two primary political parties.  That elevates the border concerns because what other national republican policy can the media highlight?

You're very right, that creating a sense of urgency using fear and exaggeration and lies works well.  It always has.

Congress unveils roadmap to averting partial government shutdown

Quote

Congressional leaders on Sunday announced a package of a half dozen annual appropriations bills set to be voted on next week.

Why it matters: It sets the stage for Congress to avoid a partial government shutdown on March 8.

Top Democrats and Republicans in both chambers announced agreements on bills to fund a raft of less controversial government agency budgets until Sept. 30.

The agencies funded by the bills include the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Transportation and Veterans Affairs.

The bills feature slight funding increases or reductions but avoid the drastic cuts House Republican hardliners had been pushing for.

Will this lead to talk of ousting Johnson?

Quote

While the bills are likely to sail through the House under a process requiring a two-thirds vote, Johnson will almost certainly face fierce backlash from the right.

The right-wing Freedom Caucus has urged him to allow a government shutdown rather than agree to government spending bills that don't include deep cuts and restrictions on social policy and law enforcement.

It's difficult to negotiate with extremists.

He didn't pass any immigration laws.  What's you point?

Our most acute problem to solve isn't comprehensive immigration reform.   I'm still not convinced that is even needed.

Either way, what we need first is to secure the border.  Following current law and providing resources for that is the first step before discussing reform.
