What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

I'm hooked on NYT Spelling Bee  : make as many 7 letter words out of 7  letters --must use the letter highlighted in yellow middle.    Can use a letter more than once. Got up to 16 words other day, my all time high.

Some children’s hospitals around the country are being overwhelmed with patients suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in particular is on the rise, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cases have spiked, especially in the Northeast and South.

Even back in the day, RSV was a big component of the hospitalized peds population. That and things like HIB and pertussis.  We didn't often see kids with coronavirus illnesses... that was more of a adult thing.  Our regional PICU staffing problems evened out with things like the HIB vaccine.  So far they've been unsuccessful developing a safe and effective vaccine due RSV.

These long term problems are exacerbated by nursing shortages and stress.  Payment versus patient and prevention centered care keeps our health system fractured and inefficient.

We've been seeing RSV for a while now, and are seeing an increasing number of kids with non-COVID coronavirus.  And they seem to be sicker than inl years past, although this might be that kids that would have come to the PICU previously are going to the floor due to bed availability.

“The state approved his voter’s registration and issued him a voter identification card,” Fort Lauderdale attorney Michael Gottlieb wrote in a motion this month to dismiss a different case connected to the voter-fraud charges. “He voted under the authority granted him by the government, and now that same body is seeking to incarcerate him for the very act they approved and encouraged him to take.”

Well said.

Man has case against him dismissed although DeSantis is going to appeal.

He really seems to have lost his soul on this one.   His objection to felons voting is that they are disproportionally black and thus likely to vote Democrat. In a state where Republicans have one by less than a percentage point in some cases, this is important.   He also wants to show voters in the upcoming race he's tough on fraud.

As you know, I live in Florida and trust me when I say that while there probably are a significant amount of people that believe the presidential election was stolen, voter fraud in Florida is not on our minds at all.  Things like the high cost of insurance and the lack of insurance availability, housing, gun rights and violence (depending on which side of the fence you're on) and education are on our minds.

DeSantis is going to win the election easily.  His handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Ian is getting good reviews from both sides of the aisle including me.  This has caused him to rise enough points in the polls going into the election to seal the deal.   He can relax and show a softer more understanding side but I'm not sure he's capable of that.

The only reason voting issues are discussed in Florida is because DeSantis made an issue out of a non-issue.

The governor has signed bills into law that make it more difficult to vote by mail, limit the use of ballot drop boxes, require third-party groups to issue a warning when trying to register voters and create an Election Crimes and Security investigative force. He signed a 2019 bill that restricts the ability of felons to have their rights restored under a voter-approved constitutional amendment. When federal judges blocked both of the bills, ruling they unfairly discriminate against Black voters, the governor appealed the rulings.

DeSantis has said he will “hold people accountable, who violated our election laws,” and earlier in August announced the arrests of 20 individuals who voted in 2020 but did not have their rights restored. He said there will be more arrests.

Let me get this straight.   An undocumented immigrant was hired illegally to get undocumented immigrants out of Texas.  Can't make this stuff up.

It is unknown how much the DeSantis administration knew about what the contractor allegedly did.

I'm a music geek but at my age also getting out of touch with some of the more modern music. But I still buy and listen to new music, mostly in the Indie genre.   But the big news in music is Taylor Swift released her 10th album last night.
I'm listening to it now on Spotify and it's good.  She crashed Spotify when it was released.  All I had to do was type "T" into my search bar and she showed up first.

No one cares, but it "caught my attention today"
