What caught your attention in the world today?

Published

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

So what caught my attention in the world today is the Queen laying in State.  Has anyone else watched?  It's true the US has nothing even remotely close to the choreography and detail associated with this semblance of Power.  I've never seen anything like this in my life.

It is quite a spectacle and difficult to ignore.  Most of us haven't seen anything like this... she wore the crown for 70 years.  When her father died people couldn't watch the funeral on television.

Like the weddings and such... it's very showy and ritualistic, interesting to observe.  Quite a number of very famous people are standing in queue to pay their respects, I understand.

It's the immigration attorneys who are saying the migrants were lied to.  don't see any quotes my the migrants except for one well-coached one ( how did he know DeSantis was behind any of this, or even who DeSantis was?).

If they were "lured" by anything, it was the porous-border policies of the Biden administration.  And, many of them died trying to get here.

The City of El Paso, with a Democrat hispanic mayor, chartered a bus for migrants out of town.  What do you suppose was the motivation for that?

It's not just the one man, the immigrants were interviewed by some of the local news.  They were told they were getting jobs and housing when they arrived in Mass, not candy and plates of food

To take the pressure off of border communities and let other communities participate in the processing of the immigrants and refugees?

Maybe you are unaware that immigrants have been traveled to other states in the past.  Only recently have republican politicians began traveling people under false pretenses or with no coordination for the purpose of spectacle and political messaging.  It's too bad that these tactics make Republicans appear cruel and indifferent to the plight of the immigrants and refugees.  It's to be expected though.

Glad you brought this up.  The City of El Paso's mayor, yea not the best decisions but he is on the front lines of this, quite unlike someone else from Florida that's not directly connected or bordered along Texas.

I did see the wedding of Harry and Meghan but this, it's long, carefully planned, and so well executed, and I'm not even going to start talking about the military and the wardrobes.

Yes I saw David Beckham but I can't really watch this all day, I can't even imagine the number of people that are going to attend.  I think I heard somewhere around 30,000

And on a lighter note ...

Around 66 million years ago, a giant asteroid smashed into our planet, unleashing a terrible firestorm that blotted out the sun and killed the dinosaurs.

Or did it? A new study has thrown doubt on the theory that the dinosaurs were wiped out solely by a mountain-sized asteroid - instead pointing the finger at volcanoes.

Researchers believe that huge, continent-spanning 'flood basalt' eruptions are what caused the mass extinction – and others in Earth's history.

The presence of an asteroid just made things worse, they said.

Their study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), claims volcanic activity appears to have been the key driver of mass extinctions.

I think it's long because it used to require days for the important people to travel for the funeral.  The monarchy maintained order in the transition with the ceremony and ritual and displays of finery.

There was quite a bit of pomp when we buried Kennedy.  Do you remember?

This has been a long and interesting (?) debate.  I've long wondered if it isn't possible that a large impact precipitated much larger eruptions than might otherwise would have occurred in such an abrupt time frame (relatively speaking). Can the earth, with it's layers and molten core experience coup-contrecoup type events and reactions?

Well, I'd have to see who and how they were promised, but it seems their expectations were a bit out of whack.  They shouldn't have been lied to, if they were.  But they likely did end up in a situation better than they were in TX.  I'm sure the good people of Martha's Vineyard could charter a plane for those who want to return.

They made a dangerous trek here over the course of 2 or 3 months as a result of being lured by Biden's policies.   I'm not shedding any tears for the hardships they are now facing by being "kidnapped" to where they are now.

Maybe this is just a form of protesting Biden's policies by the Republican governors.  I mean, calling it a protest makes everything OK, like burning down cities and marching on front of SCOTUS justices' homes.

The California County Where MAGA Took Control https://nyti.ms/3RT2RJK

Quote

In February, an alliance of MAGA activists, secessionists, vaccine resisters and self-described militia members ousted a longtime board member and won a 3-2 majority on Shasta County’s all-Republican — but officially nonpartisan — main governing body. Since then, the most populous county in California’s upper reaches has been a case study in the forces reshaping the Republican Party and governance in conservative parts of the country.

The health officer has been fired, the chief executive has quit, the head of the largest county department has retired, and Shasta has had difficulty hiring full-time replacements. The board has issued a declaration opposing state vaccine mandates.

Further on it describes the way officials were harassed, insulted, name called and threatened.  This is republic politics in 2022.

Yes, this is a topic that has long interested me.  There is a growing number of well respected paleontologists that doubt that the Chicxulub meteor impact was a contributing factor, rather than primary cause in the dinosaur mass extinction.

As for the mass volcanic eruptions, I believe the Deccan traps volcanic eruption event was ongoing prior to the meteor impact.
