What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

This isn't a criminal case this is establishment of correlation between two things....xenophobic speech and increase in violence. The link is pretty clear for anyone open minded enough to look at the available evidence and consider that words have consequences, especially when coming from people or places that people trust.

The reference to "observers" was simply discussion of the findings... what the non-Asian respondents of the Project Implicit "Asian Implicit Association Test" told them. The quote you highlighted cited the source and explanation for that language.

Yes, we all have witnessed or heard or read about many things that Trump has said that are completely inappropriate. Sociologists will continue to study such things even if folks dismiss their reporting.

My comment that you quoted was not directed to or at you... that means that I didn't disparage anything of yours.

I suppose your anecdotal opinion rebuttal is worth something...

Correlation is not causation. What you posted barely ranks correlation. You provided no evidence except for "observers say.......". In you source. It even says, Asian hate crime started to increase in 2020 then CONTINUED after Trump said what he said. Not increased or started. Just continued.

No one said they said "China flu". Only that there is not any direct evidence that Trump calling it the China virus  caused a up kick in hate crime. Even the sources given by baloney said they started to increase and then continued after he said that.

I call it COVID as most people do. So an Asian person wouldn't have to ask that.

However COVID did come from China.

I wonder why the former president repeatedly said China flu, China virus, or Kung flu. He was certainly aware of the correct terminology.

And I wonder why he refers to his former transportation secretary as Coco Chow?

You may believe as you wish. Apparently you don't find the citations or analysis credible and therefore they won't influence your thinking. Okay.

I offered up a number of discussions about the correlation from a variety of sources and all of that is dismissed because you feel that the significance isn't that hate crimes against Asians increased in 2020 while Trump was using that language, but that it continued.

That doesn't make any logical sense to me but you do you.

What leads you to believe this is a healthcare professional?  We have no evidence of that.

Is that what you think this is?  That's pretty simplified and toxic thinking, IMV.

Otherism.

This is a way to divide and separate from others based upon shifting criteria rather than facts and evidence.  I suspect that comes from media choices.

Do you think your remarks are representative of mainstream conservative ideology and communication?

Or are you just trolling us?

That story you cited from ABC News had a whole lot of "studies" without indicating who did the "study" and all the variables.when it was done or sample size.  Also allot of "experts" who "claim" and a few "seems to indicate"  There was no explanation on how these loose variables are related to Trump. Good effort though.

Weak at best. This would be an interesting example of media bias to be discussed on the other thread.

Yes but without set and outlined variables, correlation does not conclude causation with out defined controlled variables.

As Healthcare professionals we know that you should not draw conclusions to causation from correlations. Without definitive diagnosis test.
