I am new to this forum and nursing school. Just wanted to know what are the best pens to purchase. Please, I need as many responses as possible so I can try them all and decide.
THANKS :)
I'm starting nursing school this August and I know there's a lot of note taking ahead of me :)
I was wondering what kind of pens (that are at least medium point) are good for someone who really presses hard on their pen? I know that's worded weird. I don't like cheap pens because I press down too hard on them to get the ink out and they hurt my hands within minutes. I like ones that write VERY easily like gel pens... or any kind that write easily. Any suggestions?
UNIBALL!! the ones that claim to prevent cheque fraud, the ink embeds itself in the paper for securityand for god's sake get the CLICKY kind. it's either that lose the cap (and you will), and jack your scrubs up. you get ink all over them, the tips poke through...it's just a nasty thing all around.
I agree, the Uniball Signo is my favorite pen.
HOWEVER...
the Signo (as well as most other gel ink pens) do smear if used on anything other than plain old paper. Heavens knows how many birthday cards, post cards, rebate forums, manila folders, or anything made of paper or card that was even the slightest bit shiny, that I have had to toss out because the gel ink didn't dry fast enough or dry at all.
So if you use the Uniball, keep that in mind. It is a fantastic pen--I buy the fine points and run through them like there's no tomorrow, but I also like to keep some retractable Zebra ballpoints on hand just in case I run across such paper.

I use this pen and love it. A friend of mine also uses it. On the floor I've had nurses comment about "what a nice pen".
Here's why I like it...
1. there is a nice grip on it that isn't too thin to too thck
2. it's retractable and so it doesn't have a cap
3. the fine point on it is the finest point I could find so it makes it very easier to chart in small areas because the lines are nice and narrow
4. you don't get any ink dots, your lines are very clean and sharp
5. it's stainless steel and won't break in my pocket or purse
6. it's a little shorter then the average pen making it easier to keep in my pocket
7. it's not bulk in my pocket
They have another pen that is very similar except it doesn't have the grip and is very thin. I used that until I found the ones with the grip.
They also have a mini pen. Basically it's half the size with a cap on and full size when the cap is taken off and put on the back.
These are the only pens I use in school and on clinicals.
I wanted to add that I won't use anything other then ballpoint. The other varieties can smear if not able to dry, sometimes they are wet which isn't good for charting.
I see somebody else recommended the Z-301...that's the one I used first and then moved onto the 402 which is a little thicker for the barrel but same point.
I know it probably seems weird to have a favorite pen but this is mine...and in all honesty they are not so expensive that you are afraid to loose them. I'm afraid of it getting lost because if I don't have a spare then I have to use a pen that is too think to write in the small boxes. Having a thin tip really let's you write more stuff in a small box and it's clearer.
