I got my transcript evaluation from Chamberlain today for the RN-BSN ... they want me to retake MATH. As in, college algebra. (*&^%$#. Despite the College Algebra class and the Probabilities and Statistics class from the University of Maryland. They also want me to take an Advanced Composition class, despite the Honors Comp class from U of MD and the AP English test that earned me 3 credits of advanced placement at the U of MD. WHATEVER. I flat-out told my adviser that there was no way I could afford Chamberlain if I'm taking all this stuff OVER AGAIN. Arrghh. She's going to see if CLEPs are a possibility, but come on! I'm really annoyed and disappointed. Every college has a different idea of what I need for undergrad general ed. stuff. Some want more of this, others more of that. It adds up to a headache. I'm not trying to get out of taking things I truly haven't had, I swear. I own up to the fact that I have three (yes, three!) associates degrees and have never had Economics, so that one's a given. But this is nuts! I have a total of 182 college credits, not even including the additional 24 credits earned by CLEP and AP exams ... grand total: 206. Holy crow. I've never actually added them all up! I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Did I mention my GPA is right around a 3.8?

Oh well ... we'll see what happens. I'm also still looking at a few other programs that made it to my "short list." It's just frustrating -- I don't want to fork out a ton of money to send my transcripts all over the planet! Requesting transcripts from three schools plus College Board (AP and CLEP) will add up. Luckily I saved ALL of my transcripts and have student copies of transcripts that MOST schools will evaluate unofficially (unlike EC, who still insisted that I must first enroll before they could evaluate a syllabus. Ummmmm ... no.).

Sigh. I seem to be in full-on whine mode. Sorry.

Welcome to the university level! Congratulations on going for your BSN. I hate to say this, but most universities are like this. I have a Bachelors (not in nursing) degree and I went through the same stuff that you're going through, and what they call it is upper General Education (I'm sure they explained this to you) which you need in order to graduate. I had AP English & History, LOL, they count towards lower GE, but not upper GE. Honestly, I believe in general education for lower division because it makes you more well rounded. But to me, upper GE is rediculous, focus on the major more. If you analyze your college education you will notice that 3/4 of your education is spent on general education while only 1/3 is spent on your major. Which in my opinion it should be the opposite. Hope you can find a program that fits your need....again congratulations and Good Luck! :wink2:

They're not asking me for upper level GE ... what they're asking me for is lower level. College algebra is not upper level GE. If it were UL GE, I'd understand the reasoning. Like I posted initially, I'm not trying to dodge a class I haven't had.

I hear you Lunah- it makes no sense that they are taking issue with LL courses that were pre-reqs to the UL courses they accepted. :smackingf

I can see your frustration. I know how you feel, I don't understand why they're even asking for college algebra because (here in California) that's not a transferable class to a university unless. The lowest transferable class is geometry (and algebra is lower than that), so I'm wondering why they're asking you for college algebra when statistics is higher than that. I can totally feel your frustration. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.

Thanks for letting me vent, everyone. It was just disappointing ... but I suppose it could have been worse, right? I have other options (and an enormous folder of RN-BSN bookmarks, LOL). My admissions adviser at Chamberlain has been wonderful. She answers emails very quickly and actually picks up the phone when I call! She assured me that she'd take my additional info and materials I scanned (syllabus, course catalog info, AP credit transcripts) and resubmit them. She reminded me that the credit evaluators are human ... and it doesn't help that the University of Maryland named their college algebra course a random, nebulous name -- Elementary Mathematical Models. Ummmmm ... yeah. The description has "college algebra" written all over it. I just don't want to end up taking too many CLEPs/DSSTs. I want to be back in a CLASS, even if it is online. I'm really quite over the whole testing-out thing!!

I'll let you know how things progress. :D Thanks for all the support and suggestions!

Hey Lunah, you may want to look at the University of Alabama for your masters. I have researched it and it seems very reasonable. No out of state fees. I have not applied of course because of the current situation in Georgia. But it may be an option? Best of Luck to you!!!

I'd be in full whine mode myself. While one door may close, another one may open. Good luck in your pursuit of a higher education.

I see I'm not alone, girl...I feel the same way as you. I for one have never gotton a degree but have credits upon credits that are just sitting there. Colleges want me to retake this and that, but I refuse to start over again and that's why I went for the LPN program and recently graduated; at least I know I have something to hold on to even though I don't have that RN behind my name. Anyway just keep trying and be determined.

Just a quick update ... Chamberlain is waiving my algebra and stats requirements. :) However, they haven't waived the English yet ... so we'll see what happens with that.

YAY!

I passed on Excelsior when I needed to take Sophomore Comp and not a single chem, pathophys, pharm, or science course. Torqued me right off.
