I saw a little guy last week who complained that he couldn't breathe. Didn't sound too bad, but looked awful. Called mom who told me her tale of woe about no insurance and no money for a new inhaler. I made some suggestions then. By mid week he was back. same story, but longs now sould like crap. Called mom back to give a heads up. Not sure what i expected her to do, except be on guard for today's phone call. Today he looks bad, he feels worse, tri podding, dyspneic, sats in high 70s and lungs that sound like an old haunted mansion. In my mind i'm already thinking that i'd have to call dfs if she blows it off, especially when my plan is to just call EMS if she gives me any resistance. Luckily she did not- was taking him for immediate eval in ER. Hoping it gets better from here.

I agree. I can't imagine being in that position. Plus side, they felt better after a peppermint (no breakfast) and hasn't returned after lunch so I really think they were just hungry. As for the pain the rest of the weekend....I've got nothing!
I am so thankful that our entire school gets free breakfast, two snacks and lunch every day!

Came in to this gem this morning:"My stomach was hurting all weekend. My mom and dad said to have you take care of it because we can't afford to go to the doctor...."

This made me sad. I bet school nurses hear it more often than not

So sad to hear this. Does your school serve breakfast?
I know at some of the schools in the district I work for, the cafeteria brings a bunch of milk, cheese sticks, applesauce, and fruit to the health office for kiddos who didn't have breakfast or who forgot/couldn't afford to bring a snack. No sense in throwing out food in the cafeteria when there are kids who need it!

We do! I have snacks in my office too but he refused what I had and chose to wait until lunch.

On the flip side: I have student here coughing up a lung, looks awful, dizzy, headache, temp 102. I showed him the thermometer and he says "It was higher this morning, but mom gave me motrin because she didn't want to miss her 10o'clock hot yoga"

Fine example of parenting right there. I bet she arrives in her yoga gear...
