Vodka tampons?!?

Published

recently there was a local news report about this new disturbing trend of teenagers inserting vodka soaked tampons lady partslly and rectally (males are doing this too), because they believe it's a quicker, more intense way to get drunk and not end up reeking of booze when they go home. has anyone else heard of this or even seen it in your ed? first it was snorting bath salts, now this? what the heck is wrong with people anymore?

here's the story one of our ed docs posted:

vodka tampons to get drunk?

robert glatter, md, emergency medicine, 10:19pm nov 13, 2011

if you haven't already seen this in your ed, some female teenagers have a new and dangerous way that they are experimenting with alcohol--soaking tampons in vodka. rectal use has also been reported with males and females as well.

apparently, some teenagers believe that it is a more rapid, lasting and intense way to get drunk. law enforcement as well as eds throughout the country are seeing this in increasing numbers over the past year apparently, according to a recent news story out of phoenix.

from a physiological standpoint, ethanol gets absorbed directly and rapidly from the lady parts since its a highly vascular structure, and without any barriers, leading to higher serum levels of ethanol more rapidly.

beer bongs have also been utilized rectally in the same concept as a vodka soaked tampon- leading to the same rapid effect of alcohol intoxication.

teens apparently have turned to this method because they believe that they can hide the smell of alcohol from their parents as well as the police. they have also figured out that this method can avoid the nausea and vomiting and other obvious signs of ethanol intoxication- the only issue is that they often pass out before realizing that they have had too much to drink. (incidentally, it has been reported that a super tampon can hold about a shot of vodka, which is quite potent when it's absorbed directly into the bloodstream)

it is important to emphasize to teens that they will not pass a breathalyzer test because they didn't drink the booze-- the assay obviously checks for checks for a systemic alcohol level-not what is expired in their breath.

er personnel need to be aware that patients who present to an ed with a depressed level of consciousness, without the smell of alcohol and clinical suspicion for ongoing intoxication need to have a rectal and lady partsl exam to exclude tampons or other foreign bodies as a source of ongoing chemical intoxication. this could obviously lead to a delay in care (and diagnosis), as well as a source of ongoing intoxication, if this is missed on physical exam.

OK. We so need another thread in the Humor section of AN.

I believe some of you that have been around a while could really start it off and running. Nursel56? How 'bout a starter? -or- Mrs. Harvick? Seems you might have some information :D

There it is, my friend. I didn't start that thread...but don't worry, I did contribute! ;)

We need to wake that up again!!!!

I have a 14 y/o, and I asked her about this...she said "omg! that's retarded!" ... well said...

I don't mean to digress from the topic of this thread. Call me old fashioned, but I still prefer my booze in a glass.

This quote, however, is troubling. It's offensive.

Can we please stop using the word "retarded" to refer to things that we think are stupid? If you think that the above is "well said," I ask you to substitute "disabled" or "handicapped" for the word "retarded." Then see if you think the use of the word "retarded" in the above sentence is still acceptable.

I don't mean to attack the poster, because I know this use of the word is widespread. It drives me crazy when I hear it at work. On behalf of my mentally retarded friends, I suggest that nurses should know better.

"life isn't that bad"---- I suppose you've walked in the shoes of all teenagers to actually say that? Just because YOUR life wasn't that bad, and YOU wouldn't have thought to do stupid ****, doesn't mean the whole world is going to be the exact same way.

Teens are impulsive and often crack under the 'everyone else did it' peer pressure. Not all kids can resist that pressure. The fact that healthcare professionals don't understand childhood development and psych is scary to me.

I think a teenager that does that sort of thing has alot of self- hate issues and before you say things to me about what I do or didnt do as a teenager and what I understand about being young you are assuming you know alot about me as a person or a nurse. I do understand what teenagers can do Moon I was a teen mom and yes that was psychologically damaging to me at the time but that still not excuse stupidity in a human being it wasn't something that was going to kill me and make my parents wonder why I am sick in a coma because of alcohol poisoning or dead.

It is a sign of the times that young people dont even care enough about their bodies to not do painful things to themselves. I both understand clinically and professionally and also personally what a adolescent is capable of I dont understand what the world is coming to and by the way please get off your moral high horse about not so subtlely saying to me that I dont understand childhood or adolescent development or psych is insulting to me personally as a nurse. I have actually worked in psych for many years and I have never seen a young teenager or adult do anything like this to themselves. I feel it is self hatred or self abuse because alchohol in any mucous membrane would be extremely painful so the getting drunk idea is not the only reason they are doing it. That is the problem we make excuses for teenagers instead of finding out why they are doing these things to themselves. Teenagers kill themselves accidently through things like this or on purpose each year. I am just tired of reading and seeing what young people do to themselves. This is a forum where nurses can be honest and say how they feel not clinically ... but personally. I am sorry that my feelings offend you. To each his own. :twocents:

We are going to have to add that to our triage assesment.

Have you dipped any of your tampons into Vodka today before inserting them?

If so do you consume more than 5 tampons in a week? If so do you want info on coming off the etoh?

We need to wake that up again!!!!

Well, it can't be me to do it. Since I've moved from the inner city hospital to one in the suburbs (and from surgery to medicine), the most interesting story involves a woman trying to eat her soap because she thought it was a little wrapped candy at her bedside.

Yeah...I got nothin'...

I'm thinking it was a direct quote from the teenager. I have many preteen/teens in my life (children of friends, mine are still young) that use this word CONSTANTLY and I hate it. I see it all the time on their Facebook updates and often from the responses they get from their friends on those updates. It gets under my skin, and most of all it upsets me that parents haven't nipped it in the bud. It's NOT a nice word. I don't even let my kids use the word stupid. I just thought I'd show you some solidarity, I cringed when I read the quote too.

You've never seen teens cut themselves? Attempt suicide? How about anorexia? Teens do ALL KINDS of destructive things to their bodies.

As far as subtle-- I wasn't being subtle. It bothers me when people have 'no sympathy' for the acts of kids without any insight what-so-ever into who the child is, how they were raised and what makes them tick.

As a psych nurse- I'd expect more compassion, not less.

Thank you. I understand why kids use the word that way; after all, they hear adults use it that way, unfortunately.

What bothered me was the poster's "well said" response to the remark.

We learned about this in nursing school. Kids are getting very creative with drugs. We have lots of teen OD's in our area.

Oh geez, does this mean we have to go spelunking on all our unconscious folks now to see if they have ETOH-soaked stuff inserted?? Haha. If I see a string when I'm placing a Foley, I guess I'll pull it ... carefully. Yikes.

Well it WAS a direct quote from a 14 y/o. Besides since we no longer use the word "retarded" to describe disabled and handicapped people I don't have a problem with the word being repurposed. The english language is dynamic not static. Not that long ago gay used to refer to being very happy.

Perhaps you should not refer to your friends as retarded?
