Vent: I absolutely HATE stupidity! Not ignorance.....STUPIDITY!!

Published

5-month-old baby sent from the clinic 10 miles away for a respiratory workup. Baby arrived in an infant carrier with a heavy furry blanket over him. Remove that blanket and find Baby resting on top of another one....with the seat's safety straps under that! After eval and treatment, as part of his discharge, I spoke with mom via an interpreter about the carrier and the child safety seat law. First the mom lies and says that she put the blanket under Baby when they got to the hospital. I confronted her on that and she just laughed. When I asked her if she knew what the law was, she was able to recite it. Her brother drove her and Baby to the ER and he tried to excuse it by saying "I'm a very safe driver."

I am so tired of the stupidity, and stupidity is just what it is. Just around Thanksgiving there was an SUV rollover, with a 2-month-old ejected and killed. Two older kids in the car were badly injured, as well as the grandma. The baby's mom was driving down the freeway, Grandma was in the back seat changing baby's diaper, and the two older kids were in seats but improperly restrained.

There is no excuse for this....in this county all medicaid moms who get prenatal care go through a program and get free strollers and corificeats, and they're taught how to use those corificeats.

How many more children have to die before this stops???

I wear a 3" wide 5-point harness, wear a multi-layer nomex firesuit, nomex gloves, a neck collar, and a SFI approved helmet. I drive a car whose chassis is certified every 3 years, has SFI approved wheels, SFI approved shields on the transmission and under the oil pan, as well as many other approved items all in the name of keeping me safe as I drive almost 176mph down the track.

yet, the most dangerous time is when some clown in a small car pulls in front of our 80 foot long rig on the way to the track, and thinks we can stop it as quickly as they can.

When you see big trucks, or vehicles hauling trailers, please be courteous of them, and allow them plenty of space. 80 foot long rig into the back of your Civic will negate any benefits of your seatbelts.

Sorry, I think this comes under the definition of ignorance. I agree, big rigs need extra room, but not everyone knows this.

Wow guys. This is pretty simple. Wear your seatbelt. Seatbelts save lives. If you were to get into a wreck you would want to be wearing one. I mean WHY NOT??? What's the big deal, just put it on.

ok. second. to the OP, I understand what you are saying about medicaid..not meant to be derrogatory. Medcaid provides their patients with pre natal education, including a free car seat and explicit instructions on how to use it. I have private insurance, I have to buy my own. Either way we both have car seats and should know how to use them. There are no excuses for NOT using one. EVERYONE of all classes have access to car seats and instructions on how to use them. I think the oP intended to say that ignorance or cost can't be used as an excuse.

And for the person who just HAD to bring race into it..for goodness sakes..this isn't a race issue. Wear your seat belt, use a car seat, period.

as the wife of a logging truck driver i have to say thank you!!!

you are so right - on the race track, going faster than folks go on the freeway, you are safer and you do wear all your safety gear.

and yet, people make such dumb mistakes on the highway and freeways and residential streets.

i almost think we should have refresher courses every few years - remember, if you can't see the truck driver in his side mirror, he can't see you and so please don't tailgate. also, don't pull out in front of a bigrig . . . we can't stop on a dime. and a seatbelt won't help you then.

i am glad to see someone mention the big trucks..a guy i know says that riding his motorcycles close behind the big rigs gives him wind protection and saves on gas [worried about gas milage on a motorcycle???]

Several truckers have told my husband that they don't mind this.

Of course they don't mind..... a motorcyclist will just make a small greasy spot on the back of their trailer in the event of an accident.:lol2:

Yesterday I was driving through the worst slush of the year and a stupid SUV pulling a snowmobile trailer, pulled in front of me in order to make a left turn. I almost slammed into them. The same thing happened to me on my way to work. In both cases there was absolutely no need for them to rush in front of me, other than their own impatience.

My son had a rollover last winter driving 65 MPH on the interstate. He says that he remembers the accident and thinking "I'm sure glad I have a seatbelt on!" . He escaped with only a concussion, he rolled several times and totalled the car, which was an older Suburu that had those seatbelts that automatically put the shoulder belt on.

Unrestrained objects are like missiles in an auto accident. For instance a cooler stuffed in between the seats can cause head injuries and crushing injuries of other body parts. A backpack with 35 lbs of nursing books in the front passenger seat is a formidable object to avoid in a rollover.

And the more weight added to SUVs (lots of luggage, groceries, passengers, camping equipment or loaded boxes) means the greater likelihood of them rolling. In a rollover, airbags DO NOT act in the same manner as when hit from the side or front of the car, any may not even deploy at all.

Tires not inflated properly are a danger as well. I look at my tires every time I leave my house and check the pressure cold, once a month. If one tire is missing 5 psi that increases my chances for tire failure, possibly causing an accident.

Drive safe, be acutely aware of what surrounds you and could be a potential hazzard if in an accident. Please.

I wish there was mandatory helmet laws in all states. I always ride with a full face helmet but everyone else in my family refuses to wear one unless traveling cross country into states where you have to. Needless to say, I like the cross country trips the best because there is no room on bike to store helmet so it is always worn.

No matter how much preaching I do about the cycle accidents that come into my ER, the husband and son won't listen and wear a helmet. Very sad.

I agree wiht you all states should have a helmet law with a full face helmet becuase it could be a matter of life or death.

My POINT is-it's no mistake-not stupidity and not ignorance. It's plain careless disregard for another's life. It's murder....IMHO.That's the point I'm trying to make here.
