VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Don't be insulted - the gov will always try to pay less for more. It is not a reflection of your worth at all!

From what I have seen from the VA pay scales is that it starts out low then ends up being high. Right now I am on military leave from the VA and the VA I work at pays me at least 10K more then I would get anywhere else in my area. Also, I know that the VA wages are better then most GS positions in a area. Ft Stewart is a good example because I would be making more then the listed top of scale for Winn Army Community Hospital for the same are based on my Level & step in the VA LPS system. With the VA you also have to look at the benefits which are better then most private sector jobs; there are not many jobs which start you out at 26 days of vacation and 13 sick days a year. The vacation days end up being more then the 30 I get in the Army since you do not have to count weekends or holidays when you take a vacation.

Hello, so I am trying to find out an approximation of where I will be ranked if I get this position, can anytime help me? I am a BSN with 3.5 yrs exp and have obtained my ANCC certification in my area of practice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nurse 2 step 2 should be the appox pay scale for your level of experience.

So, manders....have you done any research yet?

I have a MSN as ACNP and FNP with 9 years as NP experience and they boarded me as Nurse II step 6 with salary offer 22% less than what I make with the state of Texas. I declined. Waiting to see what next offer is. But I am sure I will be staying with the State instead of the VA.

Geesh, Lubbock, been a crazy long experience for you, hasn't it?? Thanks for sharing your journey.

I expect to be boarded at less than I make now, but I also know I will pay a lot less for health insurance than the $1500 out of pocket I pay now.

Keep us posted on any new offer they make you!

And we wonder why the VA has trouble filling positions? If Lubbock NP and the VA don't come to a mutually acceptable salary, the VA goes to the second choice candidate with months more of background check and boarding for salary of that candidate. Meanwhile the position stays open and current employees are trying to cover that opening. Not a great system for hiring new employees.

Yes, it looks like I should be boarded at around RN II. A friend of mine was boarded with the same amount of experience and her BSN at a level I step 4 at a different VA, I'm not quite sure why?

How long did the whole pre-hire part (eQIP, VetPro, fingerprinting, credentialing, etc.) take from tentative offer to final offer letter?

Congrats! :)

I applied January 16. Got telephone interview March 3, Vetpro started 3/24, April- Tentative offer, then E-Qip a month later, then June 4 PE and fingerprinting. July 1, Final offer received :D. I live in Houston so it may be different if I live in L.A. 6 months from application to job orientation, but its worth waiting:D

Thanks! I got my tentative offer on 6/20 and had eQIP, VetPro, Fingerprinting, and computer training done (at least on my end) in a week. My occupational health appointment is this Friday. That should be the last thing I need to have done...I'm anxiously awaiting my final offer with a start date!
