VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Thank you! That makes me feel much better :) Now I can wait patiently like everyone else :)

I am being boarded this week, they asked for my last paycheck stub today. I still think they will low ball me on the salary. Fingers crossed.

Still waiting on offer letter. My start date is not until end of July. I have physical this week (praytell what that shall involve). My background stuff is "closed". I have to clarify what orientation involves and all that other stuff. Im hoping it does not involve me having to contact this person or that person and tons of running around on my own to get info. If it does it just going to feela little more sour to me and will leave me wondering if I want this job really if HR is so messed up like this. We shall see.

When they gave me my first salary offer I rejected it and it went back to the board for review. They told me that I could submit paycheck stubs and I absolutely refused. I never did this for a job offer nor was I going to do it now. I just feel like it gives more leverage to lowball. And besides, what nurses paycheck isnt a little inflated because of OT????

Specializes in interested in specializing in Peds or OR.

How can you tell when your background stuff is done or "closed"?

I didn't realize you could bargain the salary offered. Can you let us know what happened with your offer after you declined the first offer?

I am state employee and I am an exempt employee, so my pay never changes, I do not get overtime. I get paid once a month. I would be fine if they matched my pay. My current salary is already very close to the top of the range they list for this position.

Well, exactly what I thought would happen did! They boarded me as a nurse II step 6, I am have been a FNP, and ACNP and working for the last 9 years for the state of TX. The offer came is 22% less than my current salary. I am insulted and have wasted a lot of time and effort and money on the whole process and really upset over this.

So negotiate. Those steps ARE negotiable. Your Level as an FNP isn't going to change, but your bottom line $$ can. That's a primary reason for the paystub; they know they can't pay you much less. LESS, yes, because you'll gain more in terms of paid benefit options than in the private sector. Tell your recruiter you're requesting the Nursing Standards Board for your facility take another look at your file, that you are very interested in the position, but at this point in your life really have to make sound financial/professional decisions. Whack the ball back to them.

Have you given them EVERYTHING possible for consideration? Continuing education credits. Anything done for professional development. Everything?

I've seen the ball bounce right back as "thanks but no thanks, this is it". And I've also seen happy new hires who did just what I outlined above.

Good Luck!! Don't despair, persevere :)
