U.S.A. Texas

Hey Guys!

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for all UTMB Galveston's Spring 2012 traditional bsn applicants. Have you all started to apply yet or at least looked at the application? What do you think? How are your personal statements/testing going? If you guys have anything worth discussing please post and good luck to all!

Wow lol. Well i definitely have some doubts now. I had heard that it's kind of rough, but I figured since its so close to the school it wouldn't be too bad. Thanks for the advice guys a nightime trip is definitely in order! Oh and about the age, i'm 20. Got a couple of months but i'll be 21 in February. :dncgbby: lol

I'll be 21 in December lol

thanks everyone for the great advice!! for sure i'll be taking a trip on to galveston at night to make sure i'll feel safe wherever i decide to live at. i'm looking into either an apartment or to rent a house. not sure as to what area to stay at. also thanks for mentioning about commuting from the medical center and trying to get back home. 45 traffic is crazy!!! so i would get stay at my parent's home during those times since it closer. for mylisa, i'm 21 about to turn 22 within two weeks.

there are dorms and campus apartments, and you can request a police escort anywhere on campus. personally, i'd never live here, but my classmates who do seem happy.

I would say that Gtown would be a total HOLE if it werent for the beach,UTMB and the A&M campus.... Those are the only 3 real things that keep it nice IMO. That saying "the freaks come out at night" is a freaking understatement! When the big events are going on is when I feel the safest on the island only because the masses of people around. You deifintely won't catch me walking around after the sun has gone down... Or even driving around with my windows down. The west end is definitely the safest part of the island, imo, but then again the drive can become a headache getting from one side to the other!

If you really want to live close to campus, I would HIGHLY suggest looking around the areas neighborhoods for 'for rent' signs out front. I know there are normally quite a few 'rooms for rent' available to students by individual home owners nearby, as well as garage apartments that get rented out.

The suggestion about talking to the PD about the apartments you are looking at is a great idea! Also ask about general crime in the area.... another good point is to check out www.apartmentratings.com to see reviews of the complexes before signing a lease! Could save you a ENORMOUS headache in the long run....On the upside it will only be for 15 months :)

close cities to Gtown also have their probs...La Marque is pretty bad and parts of Texas City are not much better. The closest to the island where I would personally stay would be Dickinson or League City. Beware there is a lot of ghetto in Dickinson as well.... but some areas are good.

Didnt know there were campus apartments...sounds as if that would be the route I would choose, but I am sure they probably go quickly...

thanks! yeah i was looking into their apartments in such! ummm, yeah not for me! lol! i am just realizing earlier when i was looking at apartments and houses; i have a lot of must! i must have a washer and dryer connection in my place. i would hate to have to wash my clothes down stairs with quarters and wait. or even drive to my parents house to wash my clothes. it just seems such a hassle. i want to be stess free from all the outside world during nursing school!

Yeah I noticed that a lot of the areas close to the school seemed kind of sketchy lol.

@ mylisa008 thanks for suggesting we call the PD I didn't even think of that...now I'm really apprehensive I didn't know the island was THAT bad. And I'm 20 soon to be 21 next month! I kinda feel like I'm on the younger end of everyone lol.

I heard the average age for a nursing student at UTMB is like 26. I think with the economy the way it is, it is not uncommon to find people with prior degrees going back to do something that will leave them with better luck in the job market. I wish I had done this when I was 20-21!

Thats sort of what happened to me. I worked for a vet for 3 years, then in June of 2010 I was laid off... decided I wanted to do medicine still but this time with humans and not dogs and cats so I went back to school :) Although, I never really had a specific degree...becuase when I was in school the first go around I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. I have an AAS in social sciences but never really used it. I fell into the vet position and fell in love with medicine! So...here I am :)

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm 28 and had a career for several years and a BS degree. I just went through burn out and decided to go into nursing 3 years ago. I left my Job to work in a hospital as a tech to make sure I wanted to be a nurse. I love it and I pray daily I Get into the BSN program! I want it so badly!

I have grandparents in my class... Though I realize that doesn't mean much any more.
